Rough road Afghanistan 1/35 dio civil works

Hello dio builders,    This is a project I built ten years ago.  It includes a scratch built sheepsfoot roller, a heavily kitbashed M1083 to represent an armored dump, a detailed MATV, several figures, and of course the dio, which is intended to represent a rural Afghan village.  The idea came because I had an acquaintance who was an engineer serving in Afghanistan in the early to mid 2000's, where he operated heavy equipment, and provided  plenty of insight and help.     This project holds sentimental value for me, as a fellow model builder (Romain Baul ..read more

The last radio message sent by the survivors of Col John Frost's paras at the north end of Arnhem Bridge, just before they surrendered on 20th September 1944.   This small diorama consists of a mixture of Miniart, Dragon and Tamiya figures. The Miniart ones were disappointingly poor and softly moulded, only saved by being supplied with resin heads(although still not as good as Hornet). The guy being searched had to have a hand transplant as the originals were like spades! Luckily  I had a couple of Alpine ones in the spares box. The seated figure is an amalgam of bits from the box wi ..read more

The Red Army Arrive - Berlin 1945

May 1945 - Soviet forces pour into the shattered remains of the Reich capital.     This vignette which has, at least in my humble opinion, become the pièce de résistance of my land-based 144th scale scenes, started life as an exercise in creating ruins. Inspired by the myriad of Berlin '45 scenes in 1/35th scale that catch the eye at model shows and in publications, I wanted to create something similar, capturing the desperate defence and the apocalyptic destruction of the city.   The big difficultly was creating realistic ruins - I have tried this before using cork pie ..read more

This diorama was once slightly bigger before it was reduce to the size you see in the photos. I wanted to concentrate on making smaller dioramas, so decided to re-do the diorama. The cab is now back on and figures have been re-arranged. But I do not think it takes away from the main theme, which still remains from the original build. Hope you all like the results. I'm still adding little details here and there, but not too much as to not over-crowd it. Will be making the concrete floors a little dirty, but not too dirty; just some oil here and there. Not all areas of workshops or big factories ..read more

Helping a Brother Out - Somewhere East of the Rhine, 1945

Following the large scale Allied Rhine Crossing of Operation Plunder in March 1945, somewhere in Western Germany, a British paratrooper's jeep has taken a spin off a wet country road while on a supply run, but fortunately a passing US supply truck is at hand to recover them.     This diorama was inspired by the 3djson figure set of paratroopers loading a jeep onto a glider with some figures in pushing poses. I wondered how it could be included in a scene and this idea was born.     The scenery was built on my standard 10x10cm base with some cut up cork coasters do ..read more

1/12th Scale Scrap Yard

This scrap yard diorama, which I’ve shown a couple of times before, only exists for a few hours at a time on my work bench when I’ve got some additional scrap vehicles to photograph. It’s been over a year since I last set it up. The latest wrecks are a Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz and a Pontiac GTO. The Caddy is a Maisto diecast, acquired relatively cheaply on Ebay as it had no box and faded chrome. It was also horribly pink, so I had a fun few hours giving it some junk yard patina. The Pontiac is an ERTL diecast, very cheap on Ebay because it was missing a couple of wheels. I had some spare Cor ..read more
