Started this a week ago. I’ve had a pair in the 50 breeder for a few months now. They eat the eggs every time. So I’m giving Jacks way a try. I removed about 30 eggs. Put them in a Tupperware with a drop of meth blue.IMG_1767.jpg. Left them in here changing the water twice a day till wigglers. Added clean water no blue to the wigglers about 3-4 times a day till they started swimming. Than added to coffee filters floating in the 50g with parents. IMG_1766.jpg IMG_1765.jpgWill move them into a 5g soon. Started feeding bbs on the second day. As of now I’ve lost about 5 fry. I’ve got about 15-20 i ..read more

Hi its my first post here, but I am reading forum from a while... :-) Currently one of my breeding pairs ( turquoise) stop spawning. They were lying eggs from October/November regularly with 4-6 weeks break for a batches. My last batch almost all dies of day by day (fry was swimming up then lie on bottom heavy breeding) I was assuming flukes so I used clove leaf dewormer following instruction. Now they are not to kin to spawn again, they id but very less eggs maybe 20-25. and here rising my questions …. Are they possibly need break ? is it a good practice to put them to separate tanks ? or swa ..read more

Hello all. Just had a successful batch of pigeon blood x galaxy turquoise pairing. Noticed because of the pigeons lighter color it's seems like the fry have a harder time attaching or finding the father. Are successful pairings harder with lighter colored discus ..read more

I think sometimes we get hung up on huge discus spawns and if theres a small spawn we think of it as a failure. Even the discus pair thinks of it as a failure. Usually they eat it and breed again. It makes sense. Small spawns would require alot of resources and time. These things are better spent on bigger spawns. Theres just a better chance some will live to adult. But what if your fish spawn and you really want fry from the pair... whats the smallest number of fry you will put effort into raising? Sharing this from Facebook discus group and worth reading. GROW OUT TANKS- I have a few questions on grow outs. Please respond as to your experience and not your opinions. I value experience and know everyone's are not alike. Question 1- Can you put baby discus that are 60 days old with baby discus that are 30 days old in the grow out tank together? Question 2- How many baby discus max to what size gallon tanks? Question 3- At what point is it proper to let the parents rest ( after 2 successful hatches, 3, 4, 5, ?????) Question 4- How do you sepatate parents to give a break. put one back in ..read more

Possible Fry Deformity?

I have some 6 week old fry and some of them have an indent in the forehead area, like the one pictured below. I am doing 75% daily water changes and feeding Vern Archers beef heart mix to them 3-4 times daily. The female parent of this spawn is a bit “beaky” so I guess it could be genetic, but what are the odds this resolves itself as they grow? Or is this deformity mostly likely permanent? Thanks. Hello, I have a bunch of questions that I'd like to pose on this thread. In the next year -18 months our goal is to house 8, 29g tanks (to be used as breeder tanks painted on 4 of the 5 sides) and 2, 55 gallon tanks(for large juveniles and to start the process). We already own the tanks. I have a bit of fishkeeping experience, years of New World cichlid keeping. I teach Jr. High science by day and my wife is plant obsessive. Please advise and correct any and all aspects of the plan that I lay out below. Water: waiting for a our digital readers to come in but grandpa dug a deep well. Nitrates ..read more

Hello all I have a pair that have been laying eggs every Monday for the last month or so and just wondering how long they will continue doing this? I had them in a community tank they did get wrigglers once. They disappeared overnight, the water in that tank has a pretty hight tds so never expected success. It seems to take a lot out of the female, she barely leaves the eggs, constantly fanning them. What do you do when they continue laying weekly? Don't think it could be healthy for fish to keep doing this can it ..read more

I am trying to raise my fry artificially because the parents tend to eat them. The problem I have is they do not eat and die with empty stomachs. I have tried micro worms, newly hatched brine shrimp, notifiers and spirulina powder all to avail. I keep them in the same water that they came from. Several water changes a day. I also have an air stone giving them oxygen. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank u ..read more
