Another windy day, bright start but clouding up as the day went on. Some views over to the main Cairngorms today for those thinking of heading that way. Snow has been going fast! Disappointing cover for a Spring ski. Due to be cold over the weekend, hopefully this will slow the thaw down. Some long distance shots- Lochnagar Corrie.   Loch Muick and the hills of Glen Clova behind.   Braeriach. Corrie Odhar (above the Corrour hut) on the left.   Ben Avon. Little snow on the plateau.   Beinn A Bhuird. The main corrie on right is Corrie na Ciche ..read more

Windy!

It looked like a classic Spring day, mild temperatures and blue sky. However, as forecast, the winds were very strong giving challenging conditions on the hills. By afternoon the winds eased slightly, probably to the relief to walkers on the Lochnagar plateau.  Tomorrow’s winds will be strong again but not as bad as this morning.  There has been quite a bit of snow loss, Corries and the higher hills of the main Cairngorms are now holding greatest amounts of snow. Challenging to get a steady shot! Relatively sheltered on the walk up from the track, it changed at the top of these step ..read more

Another Wintery blast last night with a covering of new snow by morning. Freezing levels gradually rose during the day, around 0 degrees Celsius by midday and expected to be above the summits for these next days. Rain tonight with a dry but very windy day forecast. Looks like we’ll lose quite a bit of snow over these next days.   Kenny making his way up the steps to the col. Precipitation was falling as snow first thing but gradually turning to rain late morning.  Drifting snow at 940 metres. Freezing levels are expected to be well above the summits tonight with rain at all levels ..read more

The Winter that keeps on giving……

It was a lovely Spring day on Lochnagar. Quite blustery at times but when sheltered from the wind, it felt warm. This Winter has been pretty tough weather wise and it looks like tomorrow this trend will continue! Heavy snow in the morning with gale force winds, Winter is not finished yet! Perfect camouflage!   The ‘Queen of the Cairngorms’ came out of hiding today. Looking good post thaw, it’ll probably look a bit whiter tomorrow.   The Main Corrie. Old snow is expected to become very hard as the freezing levels drop tomorrow.   The Black Spout (R) and Raeburns (L). &nbs ..read more

Patchy snow cover

Yesterday’s mild conditions did significant damage to the snow cover. Everywhere is looking much more patchy now. Below 900 metres the patches are quite small, especially on Southerly aspects. Above 900 metres there are still larger areas of snow, mostly in the more wind sheltered locations on West through North to East aspects. The winds will steadily decrease through tomorrow giving us a bit of respite from being battered and blown around. The 72 hour outlook is still quite unsettled though with more fronts coming through. Super windy today with an average wind speed around 60mph at 930m , gusting 75mph. Even at 400m the gusts were knocking you sideways. A significant thaw was taking place with the air temperature up to plus 7 degrees centigrade at 900m and 14 to 15 degrees in the glen. The snow is soft and wet and has continued to consolidate. The rate of thaw will slow tomorrow as the freezing level lowers to around 1100m, with some light snow forecast for the highest summits. Staying very windy though. No mountain shots today – all the photos were taken down in Glen Muick River Muick pumping water through th ..read more

It was windy and snowing in the glens first thing this morning, not the most appealing of days. However visibility gradually improved and the winds eased so it turned out okay. Not sure how long the Wintery landscape will last, it was already 0 degrees mid-afternoon  and climbing. The snow was disappearing fast as I came down. Lochnagar will look a bit different tomorrow after the incoming rain and mild temps, courtesy of Storm Kathleen, but it looks like it’ll become a bit cooler again Sunday. Another long walk today. Yesterday’s tracks had disappeared and the odd deep drift was encount ..read more

As I’ve been yo-yoing up and down Lochnagar in the cloud the last few days it was nice to get a view, only briefly as I was heading down. Its quite hard going above 900 metres at the moment, much firmer on older snow. Tomorrow will be a game of two halves. Expecting snowfall (mainly overnight) and a cold start to the day but in the afternoon freezing levels will rise to above the summits.   Good timing! Walkers arriving  just as the cloud lifts.   The main Corrie. Not sure it’ll be quite as white after the weekend!   The South Sector.   A view back to the Col fr ..read more

Another day of walking about in the clag again. Precipitation was generally light,  although the Lochnagar burn crossing was higher than recent days. Snowfall above 700 metres progressively becoming deeper with altitude. It’s fairly slow going in the soft snow at the moment, older snow is firm but mostly in the corries. More unsettled weather due Thursday evening, may be wet and last into the weekend. This pic is from yesterday (Tuesday) around 850m. Very similar conditions today with a bit more snow and stronger winds.   Under the plateau. Snow is mostly well bonded but there are ..read more

Precipitation overnight fell as snow above 850 metres in parts of the area – mostly north of the Dee, some around Lochnagar and very little around the Glenshee ski centre hills. With a freezing level around 1000 metres the snow was quite damp and sticky with very little drifting taking place. The old snow had firmed up above 1000 metres. There is due to be some more snow in the next 24 hours – Forecast to be in the region of 5 – 10 cm but possibly 15 cm in places.  With strong ESE winds and a 750 metre freezing level there is definitely going to be some drifting and windslab build up in w ..read more
