I’m going to be in KL for 6 days in November. Planning to stay in the city centre but haven’t booked a hotel yet. I’ve been trawling the extraordinary treasure trove of posts by @klyeoh to try and draw up an eating itinerary. My husband and I love to eat and I usually do the planning around that when we travel. I’ve never visited KL properly before, only transited through the airport. To try and make some sense of the eating opportunities, I’ve tried to group eateries by neighbourhood. KLCC: Madam Kwan - for nasi lemak, nasi bojari, satay Burger and Lobster - for the lobster laksa? Seems super ..read more

Com Ga Mi Mi House is the second venture by husband-and-wife team, Penang-born Michael Tan, and Hue-born Laurent Nguyen, who opened their first restaurant, Saigon House Cuisine, back in 2017. Com Ga Mi Mi House, located just two doors away, specializes in the relatively lesser-known Vietnamese-style chicken rice, plus a few others dishes in its tight, compact menu. Our dinner yesterday evening consisted of: The house special Cơm gà nướng - chicken rice, served with grilled chicken and chicken livers & an embryonic egg. My first time having Vietnamese-style chicken rice, and it was good ..read more

How do you research eateries in Japan?

Quick question, what resources/ website do you use to research eateries in Japan? It doesn’t matter if the resources/ website is in written in Japanese. Best if its a resource used by Japanese and not tourists. The Japan equivalent of Yelp / Google Map reviews/ food forums. I don’t mind and will walk into random places of course, but sometimes I also want to know if there are some places that I should prefer over the others, whether in big cities or small villages. Thanks! 4 posts - 4 participants Read full topic ..read more

[Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia] Lunch at Tarbush, JW Marriott

It’s a challenge to rate the top Middle-Eastern restaurant in Kuala Lumpur - there are 162 entries in TripAdvisor alone. There are roughly about 780,000 Muslims in KL’s 1.8 million population, so it’s a huge potential market out there for Middle-Eastern food. The General Manager of the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, Syrian-born Mahmoud Skaf once shared with us (when we met late last year) that, in his opinion, the best Arabic food in KL can be found at Tarbush restaurant inside JW Marriott. Skaf has stayed in Malaysia for 18 years, and he thinks the cooking at Tarbush reminds him of his grandmother ..read more

Taiwan 2024. Nose to Tail - MilkFish!!

Taiwan’s southern countryside is interspersed with rice fields and aerated ponds. Fish farming is big biz in Taiwan, with Tainan the MilkFish capital of the country. Milkfish is a fatty fish, a desirable characteric for some, not so much for others. One challenging part of the fish’s anatomny is the offal, which turns even many native Taiwanese off. Pretty much an acquired taste, which I had acquired from my very frugal mom, thanks mom!!! My wife had turned me onto this long standing milkfish specialist years ago, and we dutifully return on almost every Kaohsiung visit. When we see this landma ..read more

Taiwan 2024. Quick, Delicious and Affordable Eats

Eating well is easy in Taiwan. Most of our meals are unplanned. Head out to a food rich district, wander around and eat what comes up. Andrew Zimmern: “If it looks good, eat it!!!” Night markets are ubiquitous in Taiwan. Colorful and vibrant, affordable and for the most part, delicious. The best single Night Market food on this trip was a Pepper Bun. Spiced meat and Green Onion in a crispy toasty bun, freshly roasted in a charcoal oven. Da wife loves them, but I’d not been impressed with the few versions I’d sampled. Up until now. The queque in the Raohe St. Night Market speaks for the qualit ..read more

[Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia] Dinner at 1-Michelin-star Beta

Beta is the tongue-in-cheek, playful culinary playground that is the latest One-Michelin-star luminary in the MICHELIN Guide to Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2024. An early indication of what to expect from its friendly, relaxed vibe was its entrance - none of those hoity-toity, Zen-ish 50 shades of grey set-up with a pouting Harkonnen receptionist. Instead, it looked like a cross between a kids gymboree and last century Rainforest Cafe, with its proliferation of plastic flora and neon lights. We were half expecting to see an animatronic toucan, orangutan or elephant when we were shown inside. Th ..read more

Favorites on the Big Island/Hawaii?

I have never been to any of the islands and will be visiting the Kona coast from May 16th to the 23rd. I will have a car so I can hit other parts of the island as well. I am looking most at beaches, snorkeling, food (seafood/poke, pork and Spam loom large on my horizon) and the seahorse/dragon farm. That last one sounds bizarre but I saw leafy seadragons once and thought they were the coolest things in the sea. Anyway, I have a list of places I am thinking of going and would love any feedback, positive or negative. Da Poke: Any place that says “we serve it fresh so if you arrive in the afterno ..read more
