Flint works loose after multiple shots

My flint keeps working loose after multiple shots. I even used a graver and raised some teeth in the top jaw so that it grips the leather really well. And I crank the screw down as tight as possible without feeling like I'm going to damage my lock. It is terribly annoying. I have to reset the flint and screw every 7-8ish shots. Can anyone see from these pictures why it's happening? Is it the angle the top jaw is sitting at in relation to the bottom? Did I take too much off the back side of... Read more ..read more

I’ve got an 18th century Turkish barrel, an 18th century Turkish Miquelet lock, some walnut courtesy of our dear @Rudyard , and original to follow I’ve don’t some light gunsmithing in the past but never attempted a full build. The barrel inletting is very daunting and I’ve already made some mistakes, but it is a great learning experience! I’m only in town another couple weeks so I’m hoping to be able to get something of substance done while I’m here... Read more ..read more

Modifying Chambers Traditional Oil Finish to slow drying

I have been trying to get a hold of Chambers with a question and can't get an answer so I thought someone here might know. The question is can boiled linseed oil be added to slow down the drying time a little. Here in Colorado it's dry and I'm hurrying to get a coat on in about 15 - 20 minutes but to me that's a rush and it's still starting to get sticky. I'm thinking 1 to 4 or 1 to 3 parts linseed oil to Finish. I think it has linseed in it and it says on the can that it's compatible... Read more ..read more

Single set trigger search

Gents, I'm new to set triggers of any type and am on the search for a single set that I can use with a fowler t/guard. Stan Hollenbough's not doing his at the this time, the Cain seems like it might be a bit too tall (?), Davis has a new one #0002 that looks promising, and L&r's SST-S could work but I don't know their status quality wise these days. The Cain and Davis 0002 are the same price but the new Davis will fire unset or set. Has anyone had any experience with that New Davis ? This... Read more ..read more

Extending the length of a sear arm without welding

Sets of lock castings bring all sorts of unexpected challenges because they copy originals, without considering whether the lock as it is cast will work well in a variety of situations. In this case, after assembling my new build I found the sear arm was short enough that it did not pass beyond the trigger plate. Not sure why I hadn’t noticed that. Seemed to work during the build but maybe just barely. So I made a lap joint extension with a piece of 1080 steel, pinned with a 1/16” rivet... Read more ..read more

What a bummer! Putting my Early Keland back together after browning the metal and noticed this defect. I sent this photo and my receipt off to the seller and hope to get a replacement ASAP. There is a smoothbore match coming up at the end of May and I haven't even sighted the long gun in. Larry ..read more

I have been working on finishing a woodsrunner. I used LMF browning for the barrel and lock. I over did the browning and while it looked ok it was just not what I had in mind. I ended up with a nearly black egg shell finish on both of them. After waxing everything and putting it together with the cherry stock it looked pretty good but it was still not exactly what I had wanted when I started. It dawned on me this morning that there was nothing keeping me from just starting over. I filed and... Read more ..read more

A little lathe time today.

Took a little time to work on a lathe project today. The part with the roll pin was a previous project, made to be a hollow base pin for an older Lyman 45 cal mold. The other project is a new drum for a caplock to flintlock conversion on a Jukar Colonial Pistol. These are halfway made like a patent breech, all wrapped up in a drum though. Odd shaped drum in my opinion it would be better suited for a bleeder on a brake caliper. Anyway, purchased a bolt from the local farm store in... Read more ..read more

Hi Folks, I haven't posted much recently because the Braintree Hill shop is very busy. We recently worked over a bunch of Pedersoli and Miroku Brown Besses, some requiring locks to be rebuilt. The main objective was to engrave regimental markings but quite a few needed serious lock work to function safely and reliably. Anyway, we did the engraving. ... Read more ..read more
