About Dawn Land Joseph Bruchac
Dawn Land is, in a way, a historical novel. It draws strongly on the oral traditions of the Western Abenaki, the Haudenosaunee, and other native nations of the northeastern woodlands. Some of those traditions have never been put into print. The novel takes place in the period not long after the most recent glaciation, thousands of years before the first recorded arrival of the Europeans on these shores. It was a time of many changes and the main character, Young Hunter, may be seen as the prototype of some of the heroes found in the oral traditions of the Weste ..read more

Introduction
In the summer of 2020, the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis ignited a great movement for justice and change. People across the country fought to reclaim their communities and their rights through direct action. Many so-called “great men”— traitors and murderers like Robert E. Lee, Juan de Oñate, Christopher Columbus, and Junipero Serra—were unceremoniously dethroned to be melted down, warehoused, or sent to m ..read more

Read author Joseph Bruchac's recent blog post about his upcoming book Dawn Land.
About ten thousand years ago in the northeast, the Abenaki – People of the Dawn Land – created a thriving community in social and ecological balance with nature and with each other. But a shadow is crossing over this place, threatening his beloved homeland, and Young Hunter is called to its defense.

A Broken Food System
America, from its earliest settlement days, has depended
on its rural acres and their farmers to feed the nation.
As we think of the future of rural America, we must
also consider the future of agriculture because rural
America and agriculture have long been linked
together. Providing a ready supply of safe, healthy
food has long been the goal of rural America and
its many farms. But because of the mantra “bigger is
better,” and because of national and often local pol-
icies that encourage industrial-size agriculture, the
number of farms has decreased dramatically since
