Understanding Animals Blog

Winter Solstice marks the moment when the sun begins to return, and the days start to lengthen again. In many ways this ‘turning of the sun’ feels like another moment to start the new year.  This Winter Solstice Ritual provides an opportunity to consciously step from one twelve month period into the next. However this ritual can be done at any time – whenever you feel a need to let go. Any time that there are major changes or shifts in your life, you can use this ritual as a way to release the old and set an intention for what’s next. It can feel that you are stepping back into the ‘drivi ..read more

Embrace the rainy season
Understanding Animals Blog

As my time in Australia draws to a close and I contemplate exchanging a Sydney summer for a UK winter, I’m wondering how to embrace the rainy season. How to adjust to a dark, cold and wet autumn that’s rapidly moving into winter without simply longing to be back in the warm sunshine. It’s not the rain itself that I’m resisting. Give me torrential rain in a tropical climate and I’m quite happy, because I know I’ll soon be dry and warm again.  But weeks of rain when it’s also cold and dark is another matter. This has led me to think about rain in more detail. How we ..read more

Roots Meditation
Understanding Animals Blog

This ‘Roots Meditation’ guides you to imagine roots coming out of the soles of your feet, going down into the earth, connecting you to the earth and to all the life forms that are there.  All living things are connected to the earth, and you can connect with any living thing this way.  When you connect to the earth through your ‘roots’ you can connect with the microbes, worms and insects in the soil, to the roots of plants and trees nearby, to the imaginary roots of animals.  Even birds and other flying things spend some of their time on the ground or in trees and shrubs, so you ..read more

Understanding Animals Blog

Autumn and Spring are the best seasons for communicating with nature. These are the times of greatest change in nature’s cycles, and this year we have also seen some unusual weather patterns all over the world.  This is having an impact on the animals, birds, insects, plants and trees.  Whether you are in the northern or the southern hemisphere, this is an especially good time of year to ask the nature beings around us how they are experiencing these changes.  The change of season and the change to the global climate. We can simply ask “how are you doing?” and “what do you nee ..read more

I want to introduce you to one of the foundational habits of nature connection – Sit Spot time. What is Sit Spot and why is it important? Habits are formed through repeated behaviour and our habits define our perception of the world, which is why we notice things that are important to us.  When you practice Sit Spot time regularly you will find yourself noticing things you never noticed before, and when you return home you will notice them there where you never noticed them before, because you have retuned your perception. Sit Spot is a place in nature that you can visit regularly and ge ..read more

Subtle activism is the action of consciously connecting with people, places, animals, events and sending them loving energy. It is an active engagement that works on the subtle level. Hence the name, subtle activism. This practice has been shown to have an impact upon the recipients of this loving energy. There are several peer-reviewed studies that have shown that when groups of meditators sit together regularly there is a measurable effect upon rates of violent crime in those places. It is thought that the field of consciousness that is achieved by these groups of meditators influences the c ..read more
