Following the harsh reviews of their recent London show in which frontman Ricky Wilson was not at his best (to say the least), we didn’t really know what to expect from the Kaiser Chiefs’ gig at The Brighton Centre tonight.  Our concerns were quickly replaced by a huge sense of relief the moment Ricky got on stage and broke into singing Born to be a Dancer, standing on the rooftop of a makeshift garage with a full moon rising behind him.  Kaiser Chiefs at Brighton Centre, photo by Gili Dailes Bursting with energy and full of charisma, Ricky quickly got the crowd fully engaged and com ..read more

Words by George Imbert | Photos by Gili Dailes Wednesday nights are normally quite a tame one for me, and I’m sure for many others. But on Wednesday 17th November I left The Dome at Brighton with sore cheeks and an aching neck. No fights had taken place – instead I’d had an incredible night watching one of the best rock bands in the UK. The Darkness, photo by Gili Dailes From the moment The Darkness strut on stage the crowd breaks out into furore. The low stage lighting allows us to see Frankie Poullain’s awesome silhouette of wild hair, flared trousers and velvet blazer, followed by shorts ..read more

Teleman took to the stage at Chalk to conclude a UK tour that comes in anticipation of an upcoming five track EP, Sweet Morning. The band brings an enthusiasm to both studio and stage that give their indie pop a playful nature and a well deserved popularity. With several recordings now under their belts, they come equipped with a range of fan favourites punctuated with new material. The setlist drew several tracks from their last album of 2018, Family of Aliens, as well as an assortment from almost all of their other studio records, and three of five tracks from Sweet Morning.  Teleman a ..read more

Villagers returned to Brighton with their sixth studio album, Fever Dreams, taking to the stage of Chalk with gleeful looks across their faces. Keeping to a heavy focus on the new album, three quarters of it was played through with a generous nine of its twelve tracks served up through the evening.  Villagers at Chalk, Brighton | Photo by Gili Dailes After starting with Song in Seven, Frontman Conor O’Brien swapped out his guitar for a trumpet to follow with Fever Dreams. Demonstrating an extraordinary ability to hold long notes both vocally and trumpetarily, O’Brien left little doubt t ..read more

Words by Deus Kane, photos by Gili Dailes Inglorious, photo by Gili Dailes Last Monday, at Chalk in Brighton, we witnessed the return of an act not seen since before the great embuggerance, some eighteen months ago: Inglorious, a recently reinvented hard rock band from London. When I first entered Chalk, I was struck at just how crowded this venue was, especially for a Monday night. But given their reputation for high crowd engagement and strong cult following, it was not too much of a surprise. I was expecting this to be a night to remember. They were supported by Mercutio, a Shakespearian ..read more
