It’s not unusual for composers to find a quiet space to write away from their normal everyday environment. Jodie Marie went further than most to achieve this by travelling above the arctic circle to the remote island of Seiland, in Norway. Staying alone in a cabin for just over three weeks during the polar darkness, with only 1 hour of light each day she immersed herself in the history, culture and heritage of the indigenous Sámi people. It was 10 years ago that we were signposted by John Rostron to a young Cardiff band called The Knox. They seemed an ideal support for our Cakehole Presley EP launch. The band were raw, full of energy and most importantly they already had a ready supply of superb songs. The band subsequently morphed/splintered, as often happens, with Joel and Ethan continuing with Brothers and subsequently Tibet. You might remember the Vanities superb album “2001” which came out a few years ago. They’re back with a long awaited new single ‘Private Army’ which is a string drenched beauty. Although the song is a slight departure in style from their previous work it continues their high standard of song writing and their strong sense of melody. The track examines the sadly never changing proclivity of humankind to wage war on each other. Coming at a time when conflict is raging in Europe ‘Private Army’ is an epic ballad of heart-breaking proportions which strikes a chord and resonates loudly.
