How I found out about this anti-racist project
In November 2021 while scrolling my Instagram feed looking for quality content and inspiration, I came across a trailer that was part of an anti-racist project. It was the trailer for a short film by Anti-Racist Cumbria and +3K Animation studios. The trailer impressed me so much with its subject matter and quality that I got in touch with Lou Kneath one of the lead animators and offered to help get the word out about the film if ever needed.
At that point I had no idea that the film was still in it’s inception and didn’t even have the funds t ..read more

Historically the teaching of Black History in the UK has not been very thorough, and that’s putting it politely. Which is why I am always so pleased when I see efforts being made and new resources produced to challenge previous teachings and expand young peoples knowledge. Last year I was lucky enough to be asked to present some new videos for BBC Teach highlighting some key figures from British Black History. Below are 6 videos that can be used as resources for teaching black history for KS1 students. In each video we hear the story of a black icon that has shaped the history in Britain. The ..read more

Why Teach Black History for Preschool Children?
What a year 2020 has been. We’ve had all sorts going on but one of the positives that’s come out of everything is that more people have realised we need to teach Black History for Preschool children as much as other age groups. If we are to change to world we live in and make it a place where all races can live in harmony, we need to start with the next generation. And it’s never too early to start. In the early years all we need to do is make our children aware that world is a diverse place full of people from different creeds and cultures. Thi ..read more

Why we must talk to children about #BlackLivesMatter
On the 25th of May 2020 George Floyd was killed by a police officer in broad daylight. Another senseless murder of a member of the black community, it sparked a chain of events that caused people to take notice. It caused people to think about the racism black people have suffered. It has added fuel to the Black Lives Matter movement and raised it’s worldwide profile. Now more than ever it feels like there has been a shift in consciousness, like people both black and white people have had enough of the systemic racism that poisons our lives ..read more

Need homeschooling tips during lockdown?
Here are Mr W’s top homeschooling tips during lockdown. Being a primary school teacher from the north of England these simple tips should take a little bit of the stress out of the homeschooling process.
The most sensible answer is to follow the guidance your school has set. I know from my fortunate position behind the scenes at school, that all staff at every school are working hard to develop the best home-school tasks; to maintain learnt knowledge and further develop the kids’ thinking. Whilst it’s difficult to manage work with little to ..read more

What is Storytime Live?
We are in a very strange time. The country is in Lockdown and with children not currently going to school, I thought I’d do my bit to help out. Which is why I started Storytime Live on my social media channels. Twice a week I stream to at least one of my social media profiles and read 2 stories for the kids. These stories are then available for 24hrs on Instagram and 1 week on Facebook for anybody to watch. All I hoped was that it provided something for parents to do with their kids. The response has been great!
Firstly, I’d like to thank all of you who have come and h ..read more
