Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist and the primary songwriter for Canadian rock luminaries The Band, has died at age 80. Family member Dawn Robertson confirmed the news to NPR.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's songwriting credits include several touchstone songs that would go on to establish the blueprint of Americana music, including "The Weight," "Up On Cripple Creek" and the controversial "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," a song narrated from the perspective of Confederate soldiers.

Something I’ve always suspected about Ben Folds was confirmed during Tuesday night’s show at the Riverside Theater.
It’s not that he’s a wonderful pianist, which he is. Or that he’s a fashion icon, because he isn’t (although the consistency in his wardrobe over almost three decades is admirable). Quite simply, Ben Folds is among the very best storytellers in this generation of musicians.
I say this because my two favorite moments from the concert had nothing to do with playing music. It was early in the set, and he paused to talk about his Patreon (r ..read more

There are times during Action Bronson's Tiny Desk when his vocals momentarily drift. We instruct our guests to face the directional microphones so our recorders clearly pick up the voices. Action warned us of the improbability of that happening before we started filming — and, sure enough, the Flushing, Queens emcee strolled off mic a couple of times, did an about face here and there, and even took a knee mid-show.
By the time we got to "Latin Grammys," he looked over to our engineer Josh Rogosin and said, "I told you I couldn't stand still. How do you play music still?" He's got a point.

Going back to her earliest days as a performer, Sinéad O'Connor has always rode an uneasy tension between suffering and liberation.(Paul Bergen / Redferns/Getty Images)
Many of the tributes to rock icon Sinéad O'Connor, who died last week at 56, revisit the greatest hits of her four decades of controversies and scandals. But in the past week, I've found myself returning to a less controversial (and lesser seen) performance: O'Connor's 1993 take on Sebastian Temple's "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace," otherwise known as the Prayer of Saint Francis, performed live on Ireland's The Late, Late Sho ..read more

Every Monday, Add of the Week unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by a member of our music team.
For a while there, Alison Mosshart was running herself ragged. During an eight-year run starting in 2008, she released three albums as one-half of The Kills and another three as one-fourth of The Dead Weather (alongside Jack White).
Then, for seven years, nothing — or rather nothing brand new. The Kills released an album of B-side and demos in 2020, keeping fans sated until the duo came through with a couple fresh trac ..read more

When Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon took the stage Saturday night at Breese Stevens Field in Madison, he did what great live performers do best: transport you from where you are to where he wants you to be.
Standout concerts have a way of creating that sense of place. You’re not at a rock club; you’re at the best house party of your life. You’re not at an arena; you’re at the club on Friday night. You’re not at a Grateful Dead show; you’re 17 miles up in the stratosphere riding a purple unicorn named Frances.
The location of Saturday night’s concert was, by definition, a soccer st ..read more

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Pitchfork Music Festival along with a few other Radio Milwaukee team members. While we were there, our social team did a quick poll asking who you wanted us to interview. The overwhelming winner: Snail Mail.
As luck would have it, I lined up an opportunity to talk to talented singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan, whose mesmerizing solo indie project graced one of the festival’s stages. Jordan made her initial mark as Snail Mail in 2015 at the age of just 15 years, quickly garnering a devoted following through her Habits EP. On her latest proje ..read more

Just a few weeks ago, Grace Weber brought her latest single, “Intimate,” to the COLORS music series and let her vocals shine in the stripped-down setting. Her surroundings will be decidedly more elaborate later this year, when she plays the Pabst Theater for a Nov. 9 show celebrating her sophomore album.
Weber’s Milwaukee appearance is one of several on a coast-to-coast fall tour that starts in Charlotte and wraps up in Los Angeles. Fueling the run is the impending release of her second studio LP, details of which are tantalizingly scarce beyond the tour release calling ..read more

Post Malone(Alfred Marroquin / The Lede Company)
It's hard to describe Post Malone as anything other than a rockstar. He's lived like it: jewelry, face tattoos and his ever present cans of Bud Light.
But Post Malone's new album makes it sound like that rockstar lifestyle is losing its luster. It's titled Austin — after his real name, Austin Post. Morning Edition co-host A Martinez spoke with Post Malone shortly before the album's release.
The following has been edited for length and clarity.
Let's just start off with the name of the album. You named it after yourself: Austin. So what about w ..read more
