Inherited my grandfather’s mandolin a few years ago. He has since passed away. Long story short, I really want to learn to play. I know the basic g, c, d, e minor chords so hell wagon wheel is easy enough amongst other simple strumming tunes. But I would like to actually learn. Any help with resources or advice would be very much appreciated. submitted by /u/GritzMEGA [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Should I buy a beautiful antique mandolin with which I have fallen in love, when I do not play?

Hello, more experienced mandolin lovers and players! I have fallen in love with a mandolin. It is antique (1910), bowl-bellied, with beautiful silver and tortoise shell accents. It has been restored and is playable, it won't bankrupt me...but here is the issue: I don't play. I have to fly home on two planes (Air Canada and United), and it seems silly to buy a mandolin just as a beautiful piece of art. If I were to buy a mandolin to play, either as an instrument or as an object d'arte, this is it. This mandolin spoke to me and I wanted to look at no other instrument in the store. I am open to ..read more

Questions from someone interested in learning Mandolin

Hello, I’m a fan of Irish Traditional Music and Bluegrass and am interested in learning Mandolin. I have a small amount of guitar experience but Mandolin seems more interesting to me personally since it sounds like pure joy when played well and it’s unique compared to everybody and their brother playing guitar. I have a few questions before buying one and starting though: Does the mandolin sound lacking on its own? I’ve seen posts from people who believe that the mandolin needs to accompany something with bass to sound good. As someone who doesn’t know many other musicians yet and have many ..read more

The Problem is it has “good“ sound but it sounds really damp, as if someone is holding his hand on top the strings and makes it quiet. Im not sure if i can fix this do you have any tips? submitted by /u/Away_Art_1134 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I recently saw Chris looking like he was coming down off a 3-day meth binge. Is he Ok? Hopefully he just stayed up playing for 3 days, which is kind of the same thing... submitted by /u/Guitfiddler78 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

When playing double stops, my finger slightly touches the open string and makes it sound like a sitar

Hey folks. I'm pretty much a novice at the mandolin (been playing for about a year and a half). I've been trying to work on my double stops but I can't get around a big problem: my finger every so slightly touches the open string and it makes it sound like a sitar. I play with the tips of my fingers and it works great for single strings, but when I do double stops this happens every time. I've been trying to practice around it but the mere surface area of my fingers always seems to hit the adjacent string very very lightly and causes an off sound. Are there any tips around this? I was thinkin ..read more
