Believe it or not there are finance areas that invest and buy art. Some of these funds buy local artwork or blue chip type art as investment. Its a bit corporate however, it supports the arts! I was lucky enough to have a large group of paintings bought by Fidelity in Boston. This institution bought local art as an investment for the future. Some banks do offer wealth management services that include access to art investment funds. These funds are usually managed by separate firms specializing in art investment with a curator. Art Investment Funds: These are investment vehicles that pool money ..read more

Eva Hesse and Material Breakdown

I recently fell in love with Eva Hesse’s work. She was a trailblazer in using unconventional materials like latex, fiberglass, and plastics in sculpture. This contrasted with the dominant Minimalist movement that was happening during her time. Hesse’s work moved away from using the industrial materials in a cold and calculated way. Her work brought a sense of process, vulnerability, and organic form to sculpture. After watching Eva Hesse’s documentary I saw how her materials in her sculptures began to break down. Her beautiful work was falling apart. Here are some reasons why using sustainable ..read more

Mount Washington and Fauvism

Fauvism is an early 20th-century art movement that uses bold colors and simplified forms. Fauve paintings are often non-representational, and the artists who created them were more interested in expressing emotion than in creating realistic depictions of the world. Henry Matisse, Andre Derain. Georges Braque, Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy were Fauvism painters. These were the painting giants that helped me delve into painting the bright foliage of New England. The Fauve palette is a great way to capture the beauty of Mount Washington. The mountain's rugged peaks and deep valleys can be re ..read more

Large Modern Birch Tree Paintings

This series of birch trees paintings remind me of Japanese Screens. The Japanese screens of Edo that had beautiful, colorful trees, painted on them to divide rooms, and to make a tea party more artistic. The size and shape of these birch tree paintings, are very similar to the Japanese screen dividers. When I painted these modern paintings of birch trees some of these thoughts came into my mind about the forest. “ I had come to a clearing in a forest of birches. I walked for a while, enjoying the peace and quiet of the forest. The only sound was the occasional rustle of leaves or the chirping ..read more

Back in Maine Bradford had been been painting before her divorce and renting out a studio space in town. If you wanted to make a real mark in the world the big city was the place to be. She was about 40 at the time when she packed up her kids to move to New York City. By most accounts it was a pretty bold claim to call herself an artist but that’s what she did. Her kids were in the fourth grade. The aPartment was paying for a by the child support she received. She commuted upstate several times a week to pursue an MFA at SUNY purchase, teaching English as a second language as a community colle ..read more

I was pleased to be informed that I was selected as a finalist for a grant at the Newburyport Art Association. This year we saw a strong pool of submissions representing a high degree of expertise across mediums by artists throughout New England. The selection process was extremely challenging, and the reviewing committee sought overall artistic excellence, a dedication to one’s artistic practice, and a good demonstration of how each artist would use the experience. The Newburyport Art Association has fantastic programs to engage local artists with. If you are an artist in the Newburyport area ..read more
