Dunkelflaute?

Not seen a great deal of sun this year, plenty of named gales over the last winter and spring but now….Dunkelflaute!!! I’ve noticed that even using OE’s Agile tariff, I frequently have to pay more for grid power than I get for my export to grid. Now, this is not a situation with which I wish up to put with.!!!! Come on sun - how about sharing your lovely rays with the S.E. Of England please? Concerned Toodles.  ..read more

I attach examples of power cycling of my Samsung ASHP gen 6 12kw . I know it does this when it de-ices in freezing temperatures, but recently the temperatures haven’t dropped below 7° and I didn’t see this last year, does anyone know what might be causing this ..read more

Insulation of flow and return Heat Pump piping
Renewable Heating Hub Forums

I know mention has been made of ties on insulation runs reducing the insulation. Well, I have my installers coming on Wednesday to take remedial action on the external pipework runs. As will be seen in the photos, there is a ‘strap’ that has come undone and whilst I was taking this photo, I noticed how deep the plastic ties were compressing the insulation next to it. (I have very limited vision at present and as both the insulation and the ties are black, I had not noticed before). I know the strap is easily rectified and I think the control cables running in the plastic hose will need to be c ..read more

Rising Damp – Production Recommendation
Renewable Heating Hub Forums
by Mars

We've noticed some rising damp around a window after this winter. I've looked up solutions, and it typically involves removing the plasterboard and applying treatments. It's not something I'm keen on tackling at the moment. I vaguely remember seeing a product a while ago that involves sanding off the layer of paint in the affected area, applying it, and then painting over it again. Has anyone used a product like this that they can recommend ..read more

Defrost cycle question
Renewable Heating Hub Forums

Sorry if this is a daft question:   But after reading about defrost cycles I'm pretty sure I understand the basics of what is happening. Instead of heat from the environment being used the increase the temp of the heating circuit, during the defrost cycle heat from the heating circuit is used to warm the environment (melt the ice off the radiator) All the descriptions I've read use the word reverse, the heat pump works in reverse or the heat pump reverses.   Does the actual water pump pumping the water round the heating circuit reverse direction?   Or is the 'reverse' just refer ..read more

Noise problems with newly installed Samsung 8kW ASHP
Renewable Heating Hub Forums

Hi, I'm hoping someone can offer some advice. I know this is going to sound naive but I'm shocked to find that I can hear my heat pump inside the house - other people I asked prior to getting mine said noise wasnt an issue. I live in an end terrace and the only obvious place to put the outdoor unit (samsung 8k) was next to the back wall as side passage is too narrow. This happens to be the living room as my kitchen is at the front of the house. My bedroom is also at the back above the living room. The tank (kodiac) is in the loft on the party wall side. Pipes run internally up through living r ..read more

Central heating inhibitor with ASHPs
Renewable Heating Hub Forums

I've just realised with all the reading and research I've been doing about ASHP, I've never seen mention of central heating inhibitor? I have read with interest the recent recommendations of not using glycol and fitting anti-freeze valves instead but in this case would you then need normal central heating inhibitor or is there some other additive needed more specific to ASHP units ..read more

SCOP and seasonal variations
Renewable Heating Hub Forums

Does anyone have a rough ready reckoner for the seasonal differences within SCOP. How different are the seasonal variations. For example if an ASHP has a SCOP at x flow temp of 3.0. What (roughly) would be the COP in say Dec/Jan compared to Jun/Jul?How wide is the variation? My reason for asking is that I am energy rich in summer. However in Dec/Jan I import electricity at night - but I currently fully use my battery capacity during the day. Any additional electricity usage will be at day rate or peak rate. So in that sense the Dec/Jan COP is more important than SCOP. (albeit I may make a biig ..read more

ASHP Advice: High Temperature vs. Low Temperature Heat Pump For Microbore
Renewable Heating Hub Forums

Hi, I already have Solar Panels - about 150% of current usage. Battery and Eddi. Looking for advice on moving to a ASHP. We have a 4 bed house. 14 rads. House is 2006. In 2021 our gas usage CH&HW was 13411. EPC stated expected 12808. Wearing occasional jumpers and using Hive controls to only heat the rooms we were using reduced our usage to 7765kWh in 2023. Gas bill in 2023 was £788. So motivation is not simply financial. Main problem in moving to ASHP is we have (plastic) microbore. . Most installers want to provide us with a LT ASHP and replace the microbore, replace all the radiators an ..read more

Interesting heat pumps installations

Thought it would be cool to share photos of interesting heat pump installations you come across. I came across this installation today in Shrewsbury. What caught my attention was the positioning of the units, with the Daikin blowing straight at the LG. The LG is blowing straight at a wall.  7236 7235 ..read more
