Old gas valve . . .
Heating Help Forums

I need to know if the gas can be shut off using this device that is in the gas line. The line ultimately goes to an old forced air wall unit that is leaking gas. I want to shut down that branch line w/o turning off the gas to the entire house. There is a more obvious on/off valve up stream a ways, yet that valve would also cut off the hot water heater which is relatively new and has no problems. Valve was installed prior to 1969, likely late 60's. 20240504_231102.jpg 20240504_231230.jpg ..read more

Sizing Boiler Using DOE Booklet 25 Years Ago - What Went Wrong?
Heating Help Forums

My original 120K BTU gas boiler needed replacement (it was leaking). I used a booklet I think was distributed by Dept. of Energy. I calculated about 60000 BTU for 0 deg design outdoor temp. I also added up all the baseboard in the house. That was 111.5 ft. Using a Slant Fin chart for 170 deg baseboard, 550 BTU/hr gave about 61000 BTU/hr. Of course, 25 year old baseboard might be less. Still, 60000 BTU/hr heat loss still sounded good. I didn't know how to use the 1.4x oversize factor. I figured it meant multiply 60000 x 1.4. giving 84000 BTU/hr input. I wasn't going to go that low. I thought wh ..read more

I read on an electrical forum I visit that NJ will now allow licensed electricians to install and connect gas piping for generators. If my understanding is correct to be able to do this they only have to take a 2hr seminar ..read more

Boller flooding, is it the near boiler piping?
Heating Help Forums

This boiler is in a small house I work on. The piping around the boiler is wrong but it's always worked fine so correcting it was a hard sell. Suddenly now it's flooding. I went through the "what changed" and the owner moved out. They went from set it and forget it at 70 to keeping the heat low and cranking it up when someone is home. Am I wrong about the near boiler piping not letting water return and triggering the auto feed? I'm doubting that's its a clogged return. Auto feed is a VXT set to a ten minute delay. I can't recall the vaporstat setting but it's pretty low. The equalizer reduces ..read more

NTi S50 Expansion Tank / Hot Water Question
Heating Help Forums

Good day everyone, I think I have agreed to install a new NTi S50 to replace my older leaking baxi indirect tank. Yes I hope to update the setup on this as the previous install was not the best as you can tell. I have a few questions. (Thank you in advance) My Baxi Combi Luna 310 Fi has a built in (I believe) small expansion tank behind it. Do I need an expansion tank on my NTi S50 with the installation? (I was told conflicting statements on I don't need it because my combi has it, and I DO need it by code in Canada regardless) As the combi is old, it will be replaced with a NEW boiler even ..read more

At some point, we all will retire. I am old enough but love what I do so I stayed working as an HVAC manager. I have had back issues since highschool. The first back pain started after I caught a pass playing HS football. We did not throw much back then. Our coach said, " When you throw the ball, 3 things can happen and 2 are bad.. so we ran a lot. So, my senior year, they called a pass play and I was the primary target. Our QB throws me a pass and he led me way too much so I had to lay out to catch it.. so I did. This little punk from the other team speared me right in the small of my back. I ..read more
