Content warnings for: violence, suicide, attempted murder (?), relationships with minors, lots of swearing on my behalf
If you feel affected by these topics and/or fictitious stories, do not read this post nor play the game.
Loveroot Zero Kiss Kiss☆Labyrinth is an otome game released in 2010 for the Playstation 2 system. It is a romance game spinoff of the manga of the same name.
Originally, I wanted to play Loveroot Zero for a very simple reason: I thought it’d be a train wreck just like Hanayoi Romanesque. The original concept of Loveroot Zero was from Kato Chihomi, who had been the scenario ..read more

In my research about Touken Ranbu Musou (Touken Ranbu Warriors) for my previous post, I vaguely recalled that Hakuouki also had a rendition and went in search of it. The results were unexpected, in a lot of ways.
Otomate has been in the public consciousness recently far more times, for reasons less savory than a company would like. Mismanaging stock levels at pop up stores, trending on Twitter because pre-decided raffling systems were ignored and people got injured, to allowing Otomate Garden to confiscate a prize that was legitimately won. Those are just some of the reasons from recent memory ..read more

Better late than never…?
For newcomers, the otome game market in Japan is a sporadic topic I’ve been writing about and analysing once in a blue moon. It is my hope that as I do more, I’ll get better at it but who knows.
My past posts:
Up until 2017 with seedy data
From 2017 to 2020 with better data
Analysis//Otome game sales in 2021 plus some side notes
If you want to know what an otome game is
As a disclaimer, I don’t belong in the relevant field of study so take all my findings with a grain of salt and in some areas with even more grains of salt.
I’ll be using the Media Create game sales d ..read more

I originally picked this game because of CV Koyasu and the reviews saying it was short, but who could have foreseen that a game released specifically for D3P’s Simple 2000 series would be a subpar game?! Not me. Actually I had no clue that I even wrote exactly this into the post I made of the other game I played from this series.
Aside from having low expectations, let’s just say this game is one surprise after another… In every disappointing sense of the word.

As I said I would, I ended up finishing Towa no Sakura.
Towa no Sakura is a PS2 otome game from Otomate released in 2007, developed by Vingt-et-un Systems Corporation like the last game I played, Mermaid Prism. It was also written and directed by the same person who directed Mermaid Prism, Ayumi Takagi, who now belongs to Ichi Column so you can probably expect a few similarities…
This game was also released around the same time as Hiiro no Kakera and Kiniro no Corda 2 so it probably makes sense that this game was completely overshadowed by those, with pretty average reviews from players at the ..read more

Ever wondered what a 40 episode inheritance drama series with a dash of ancient curses would be like as an otome game? Look no further because I got you fam.

Moving on, a few weeks ago I was overcome with existential dread and wondered what would become of games that have disappeared off the face of the planet due to platform/companies closing down etc. It’s sad that there was an entire generation of games that were hidden behind the terrible ..read more

Furue, Yura Yura to is a series of two R18+ games released by A’sRing in 2017. Each game is split by 3 different love interests from the Heian period of Japanese history.
As I said, I’m back with the second half of the series. And it didn’t even take me a month!

Happy new year everyone!
My only goal for the end of last year was to finish Kimiyuki so I didn’t have to carry this burden in to 2022 which I achieved…but then didn’t realize I’d then have to write up this post in 2022 so I ended up bringing it with me anyway. Welp, what a start to the year.
I made it no real secret that I was massively not enjoying the game so read on for barebones summary and thoughts.
The fullcomp variation of the title screen is mildly confusing

As usual, I was going through my old magazines to clean up and I never realised that Furue, Yura Yura to (literally “shiver, sway”, best translation I could muster) was actually a timeslip game… I’d only ever seen art of the heroine in traditional clothing so I was very surprised when magazine articles showed he ..read more
