The “jeep” was standardized as the “truck, 4x4, ¼ ton” in July 1941, and provided a lightweight, all-terrain utility vehicle. The requirement for the jeep goes back to 1936 when the infantry stated a need for a compact four-wheel-drive reconnaissance car to replace the motorcycle. The soviets built some SPGs based on the T26 chassis. Found some good drawings but can't make out if the fighting compartment is a crew deck on top of the engine compartment or if the engine is moved forward and the formal engine compartment is the fighting compartment.
