Alton Garden Centre began in 1971 when Derek Bunker borrowed £1,000 and opened a small greenhouse on a plot of land near the Arterial road. It was just big enough for ten cars. The Grass Pitch Maintenance Fund provided by the Football Foundation provides eligible organisations with a tapered six-year grant to help them sustain pitches already at a 'good' level and enhance pitches that are either considered 'poor' or 'basic'.
