I'm trying to find the service record of William Farncombe of Pyecombe, Sussex. I know he was in the 35th Regiment of Foot, and I have found what I think is it at TNA WO 97/523/42 It says I can download it from FMP, but I just can't find it there. There are a few other registers etc, but try as I might, I can't find this one. Am I going daft or is the image really not at FMP ..read more

I’m searching for a photo of GEORGE NORBURY WRIGHT (DOB 18.11.1915, Salford) He was a Lance-bombardier (Electrician's labourer) in WW2 3446091 Royal Engineers (Gunner). Since our family doesn’t have one (he died before they came out to Australia), I’m hoping to find one of him in the army - long shot I know! I really don’t understand the military terms eg: rank etc ..read more

Hi I am trying to find out what I can about a 2nd Lieutenant C.E.C. Fitzgibbon. I acquired a box of items with various badges etc. and there was a dog tag with his name on it to include CE Church of England and Rb? Anyway I am not sure if the tag is WWI or WWII. If anything I am hoping to name down a unit and hopefully one of the badges with the tag might be related. Having three initials I am hoping it wont be too much trouble for all you experts. Although I am posting this under Army, it also applies to the other branches of the Armed Services. Yesterday, when I was helping someone who was looking for his father's Army records, I saw the following announcement on the .gov pages: From 1 April 2023 it will be free to apply for a military service record from the MOD. You’ll need to pay the £30 fee if you submit an application before 1 April. Click to expand... It's worth waiting a month if you are considering this now Bear in mind... Hello, I'm new to the forum. I've been doing some research into the family, and i'm looking in particular for details of Great Uncle Harry Harry was born in Alverstoke, Hants in 1886. Son of George Henry Card and Elizabeth Ellen Lester. Harry was allegedly the black sheep of the family and rumor has it he was chucked out of the army. I cannot read all the notes but below is all I know, He seems to start off as a warrant officer 2nd class 8639 in the West Ridgeway Regiment, the joins the... Harry George Lester Card ..read more

It's the little things that bug me! I have recently found out that my father Dendy Barnes born 1895 joined the West Surrey Regiment in 1920. That seemed strange as in 1915 my father was called up to the Royal Gloucester Regiment 'The Bantams' He only managed a few weeks and he was discharged as 'unlikely to be an efficient soldier'. Dad had suffered polio and had a shortened leg. In 1916, to the end of the war, he was in an Agricultural Unit, working on farms. My knowledge of my father was... Mill Hospital ..read more
