If you could tell the story of agriculture, so that others could understand, catch a glimpse of the reality...how would you do it? For us, it’s very much like you might picture it when someone mentions “cattle ranching”. It’s miles of horse back time, and wide open spaces. Desert lands. Rough and rocky terrain. We ranch in a part of Texas that fits McLintock speaking of the Mesa Verde, it “serves pretty well for cattle... but it hates the plow.” This land thrives when grazed properly. We are a 4th generation cow/calf ranching family in Presidio county, Texas. The last several years have been ..read more

The words “cowboy” and “timeless” go hand in hand. Though they are spelt different, they were created within the same. Definitions intertwined, meanings connected, hearts tangled into one. I don’t know if there is anything else that you can compare this lifestyle to. It’s one of a kind and can stand all on its own. It could never be duplicated nor can it be bought. It’s original and unique. It’s authentic and it’s real. It’s a life of sacrifice by choice. A way of doing things that goes against what our modern culture teaches. Togetherness. Family. Hard work ethic. Self sustainable. A life of ..read more

Sometimes hold my breath while I wait for a stranger's reaction to my telling them what I do. “I work in the cattle feeding industry. ” This is my usual response to the question. Some days I’m pleasantly surprised with the reply, and some I'm disheartened. There have been extremely supportive replies, some hesitant, and some that only nod and smile because they have no idea what that even means. I feel I walk around with a target on my back, placed on me by a society that has labeled what Ido as dirty, cruel, unnatural, greedy, polluted, etc. I often wonder if my grandfather ever felt this w ..read more

“I’m going to Texas, but I’ll be back”

That was my honest plan when I decided to move to Texas after living in northern California my entire life. Shoot, I had never even visited Texas before my Texas A&M University acceptance. I had always had the plan of leaving California for college, with the thought I’d come back to our family operation after graduation. Well, almost 8 years later, the second half of that plan never quite happened. I grew up on my family’s generational farming and ranching operation in northern California. We spent most of our weekends balancing between sports, livestock shows, and tending to the crops an ..read more

In March of 2020 I sold my car, grabbed my puppy and quit my job in my hometown of New Mexico. Kent, only my fiancé at the time, was loading up his Dodge pickup and a trailer with everything I had to my name, and we were heading back to his family’s ranch where we were about to start our new life as newlyweds and as 5th generation ranchers in Southwest TX. Kent’s family has been raising black angus cattle around Rocksprings, TX since 1957. He had graduated with an animal science degree from Texas Tech in 2017 and moved back home shortly after to work for his parents on the ranch. This had bee ..read more
