May His Memory be Eternal! Pope Benedict XVI, 1927-2022

On this day when we are in retreat spending time with our Lord in gratitude for his blessings and penance for our sins and faults, we pray for the eternal repose of the soul of our dear Pope Benedict XVI. May he enjoy the eternal and everlasting radiance of the face of God who he sought, desired and loved with his hole mind and heart. These past days we have been reminiscing about Pope Benedict’s trip to New York and to the Bronx when he offered Mass at Yankee Stadium. We hosted about 20 nuns and sisters from all over the country who joined us for the quick subway trip from Hunt’s Point to the ..read more

The Prioress’ Christmas Greeting at Joyous Chapter

And the Word became Flesh and dwelt among us. How often we proclaim this great mystery each day when we pray the Angelus or recite the Creed. This great mystery of our faith is so familiar to us that we no longer question it or are amazed by it. And yet, each year, as we begin a new liturgical season, we are renewed in expectant waiting for the Word, the second Person of the Triune God to be with us. “Come, and do not delay!” “The Lord is close at hand, come let us adore Him!” Our longing to be with God and gaze on Him face to face is reenkindled like the Advent candles that we watch burn dow ..read more

From September 12-17, 2022 eighteen prioresses and delegates met at St. Emma retreat house in Greensburg, PA for the 4th General Assembly of the North American Association of Dominican Monasteries. The meeting, like so many other federations, was delayed two years because of covid. We were all so happy to meet together again IN PERSON. You can chat over coffee and snacks or go for a walk together via Zoom. The delegates discussed proposals, formation and elected the new president and council for the next six years. Our prioress, Sr. Mary Catharine Perry, OP, was elected President! Joining her ..read more

Blessed be God in His Gifts!

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our anonymous benefactor for your generous gifts from our Wish List! The bakers were so excited to see the new mixer with the 9.5 liter bowl. Surely, we’ll find plenty of “excuses” to make special bread and deserts in the coming days. Our old kitchen aide sat on the counter for the longest time not running and the little mixer is too small for a monastery of 14 nuns. We are also grateful for the tool kit. We have it hidden in a special place we know about and safe from the handyman! God bless and reward all our Saint Anonymous’ who make our life possible! Webster’s ..read more

“Sing to him a new song, sing to him with joyful melody. Every one of us tries to discover how to sing to God. You must sing to him, but you must sing well. He does not want your voice to come harshly to his ears, so sing well, brothers!” -St. Augustine This week we welcomed Sarah Jane Starcher who gave us our first class in singing chant. While we do use some Gregorian Chant and almost all the sisters have had some experience of singing it, this is the first time we all came together to learn the Introit for Sunday’s Mass using the Propers for Sunday and Feasts of Fr. Samuel Weber, OSB. Wh ..read more

St. Rose of Lima

St. Rose of Lima Today we celebrated the feast of our beloved sister, St. Rose of Lima. First saint of the new world! A bit of trivia. The reason why you often see her depicted wearing a black veil and not a white veil as a tertiary sister would have at that time, is because, before her death she had petitioned to make vows as moniales although there was no monastery of Dominican nuns in Peru. She predicted that there would be a monastery after her death and to the horror of her mother she predicted that her mother would be a nun in that monastery. The rescript was on a ship on the way back t ..read more

Happy feast of St. Dominic to all our dear friends and brothers and sisters in St. Dominic! This year’s celebration was so special as our archbishop, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, came to Corpus Christi Monastery to celebrate Mass for us. A festive lunch followed in the monastery community room where everyone was invited because of the intense heat of the day. Also joining us were Fr. Richard Marrano of St. John Chrysostom Parish, Bronx, Fr. Gilbert Adama, OP from Nairobi, Kenya, seminarians, Aaron Salvan and Sean Maldonado. Our vicars for religious, Sr. Joan Curtin, and Sr. Teresit ..read more
