“Plug and Play” – Fitting Electric Motors [Video]
BlueFin Electric Marine Blog

“Plug and play ” is a term that should be used loosely when it comes to any modification – be it a car, motorcycle, website, or your soon-to-be electric boat. When I was a kid “plug and play” meant just that. You PLUG in your game console and you PLAY it. It took about 5 minutes on a slow day. Plug and play for an electric boat motor is a bit of a different concept. Once you rip the old motor(s) out and clean the bilge – as seen in previous posts – you have to prep the bilge and think how exactly you are going to fit the motor so that the propshaft(s) aligns with the gear reduction shaft. It’s been a short while since we’ve given an update on our second electric boat project i.e. the mighty Tollycraft…but nonetheless there has been significant and well needed progress. Stan, our colleague from Stratos Yacht Services, and the third ‘mastermind’ to join Bluefin has been busy prepping the new home for the compact yet powerful 9kW motors. The Black Pit Of Despair [Video]

Well the boat made it to Shelter without too much incident and it was time to clear the bilge. i.e. remove the motors, gas tanks and everything else you won’t ever need again. There really isn’t anything glorious about this process, however it certainly is one way to test one’s resolve when it comes to an electric boat conversion. What can I say? To get the electric motors in you have to take the old gas motors out. In our case, we had two 40 year old, cast-iron 318 Chrylers sitting in the Black Pit of Despair. Basically you spend hours wrenching wearing a chemsuit and particle mask lying in p ..read more

The ‘Sea Escape’ had been sitting under a grove of Birch trees for about 2 years. For the non-tree tappers out there – Birch is known as the ‘other‘ sappy tree. It seemed that no matter how much we scrubbed the deck, the little black tar spots just would not come off. We tried a few store bought solutions but as usual, mom knows best…check out the video to see what simple ‘mom cleaning recipe‘ blew the competition out of the water. After the spots were gone (for the most part) it was time for some Karate Kid action… Within a few minutes the profound message of Karate Kid lesson #1 ‘Wax on, W ..read more

If you’ve been following our Facebook page  you’ll know approximately where we are at with our electric Tollycraft project. What a journey it has been…and the end is in our sights. But it’s not really an end, it’s a new beginning. So for all who’ve missed our updates, let’s recap on what we’ve been up too! I have to be honest, the first day I showed up at the marina, the logical side of my brain began to dominate my thoughts…I mean an electric boat sounded like a fantastic idea…but with this?? An electric Tollycraft? How much does thing even weigh? It’s huge and it’s REALLY old…what did I ..read more

Our Next Electric Boat – The Bluefin 2! [Video]

Just as soon as we had the Original Bluefin on the water and tested, we could hardly wait for our next adventure. An electric inboard for a sailboat is pretty much a “no-brainer”. The Thoosa 7000HT performed like a charm and exceeded our expectations. But what about a mid sized cruiser? We really were curious how a couple of electric motors would stack up against a couple of big blocks. What would we gain? What would we sacrifice? Well the only way to find that out is to find the perfect test model and what better choice than a classic cruiser of the Pacific Northwest, a rare 30 foot Tollycraf ..read more
