Hi Folks! I passed my driving test last year (Huzzah!), I just noticed that I have shifted from a 3-year restricted provisional license to a 1-year restricted full license. This has made my life pretty difficult in terms of insurance and cars. My insurance premiums have been pretty high due to this, and I am a bit confused. Is any other Diabetic on a 1-year license? Other Diabetics I know are on at minimum 3-year restricted. For context, I am a young-adult TYPE 1 Diabetic my A1C is... Read more ..read more

Hi Everyone, Type 2 now on low dose of insulin. Can anyone advise what are the approximate wait times for DVLA to make a decision regarding continuing to drive. Also, when you fill in the form and send it to them do you have to send in your driving licence at the same time as I use mine as a form of I.D. I will also be going abroad in the next few weeks (not driving) do you have to be available to answer post etc? Thanks D ..read more

Re-applying for Driving Licence

My driving licence, which I held for 40 years, was revoked by the DVLA in January due to not 'meeting the current visual field standards'. I had extensive laser treatment in both eyes due to diabetic retinopathy about 10 years ago. Since then regular eye examinations have identified no further deterioration to the eyes and I successfully continued to drive, renewing my licence every 3 years. My DVLA field vision test last December at Specsavers prompted the revoking of my licence. I... Read more ..read more

Do I need to notify the DVLA?

I'll start with thanks to Kenny for posting the link to "Current Guidance on Fitness to Drive for people with Diabetes Mellitus" in the pinned thread above - that's what I really came here to find! I was diagnosed Type 2 a good while ago and treated with tablets. The guidance as I understood then was that I did not need to notify the DVLA - so I haven't. I really don't enjoy making holes in my fingers - I doubt that anyone does really - so I very rarely do. It's not so much the process... Read more ..read more

Hi, Type 1 since the 70s, passed my test in the 80s, C1 entitlement was removed from my license when the law changed. I now need that entitlement back. I'm currently on a 3 year license. I have a D2 form, D4 partially filled - waiting for a medical but don't know when I need to do this, and a Vdiab1 if required. I have 90 days readings - at least twice daily - on an accu-check mobile. Whats the actual process to get this done. (I find the instructions on the forms contradictory and... Read more ..read more

DVLA and C1 misery

I made a mistake by getting my C1 licence back last year. I was told to renew in December 2022, getting word back today from DVLA that I must see a consultant, that consultant has no appointments till April. My licence expires in March and I am due to travel abroad in May, a trip I need my licence for. You cannot drive on an expired licence abroad. My current A1 and B1 entitlements went down to 1 year from 3 (due to having to match C1). I now want to ditch the C1 as I cant deal with... Read more ..read more

I applied yesterday to renew my 3 year medical licence. Did this 3 years ago 90 days in advance and it went smoothly. I accidentally got my licence expiry wrong by 2 days so I applied 92 days early. Eventually got through to dvla today and they say they have no record of application. I did receive a confirmation email from noreply.fitnesstodrive@dvla.gov.uk saying Thank you for your recent application. We will contact you shortly and let you know how your application is progressing... Read more ..read more

DVLA received my medical licence renewal on 20th September 2021 and only because I asked my MP to intervene did they send a letter to my GP 6 months later on 31st March 2022. Nothing's happened with my GP as this is not classed as NHS work, so the 12 months under section 88 is quickly running out. Everything is fine health wise. I have no reason to believe that the diabetes consultant or neurologist (MS) would stop me driving, if they are contacted. I've not been in this position before... Read more ..read more
