Hello fellow growers of Canada and Ontario, has anyone have any experience growing Sarracenias from the southern US in Hamilton, Ontario or the Niagara Peninsula? I have recently bought hybrids of Sarracenia (S. x formosa and a S. flava x purpurea purpurea) and I am considering buying a S. minor var. okefenokeensis. I can mulch my plants since I have had success this year with mulching my Venus flytrap outdoors and these Venus flytraps are on their way to growing again now the weather is... I found like 10 small mushrooms growing out of one of my sarracenia today. And, to be clear, when I say "growing out of [a] sarracenia", I don't mean they were growing out of the same pot; they were seemingly growing right out of the rhizome. I guess it's possible they were just growing out of the stumps of old pitchers that had been previously chopped off though? The rhizome is pretty crowded I guess, so it's hard to tell exactly. The mushrooms emerged from all dirt-adjacent sides of... Mushrooms ..read more

Sarracenia purpurea, native to North America, is the most northerly cold tolerant of all the Sarracenia. Older traps become less carnivorous resulting in this plant often having mutually beneficial relationship with a type of mosquito larvae on the east coast of North America. The traps catch bugs, pollen and other detritus and the mosquito larvae break the catch down into more basic nutrients the plant can better absorb and use. Often growing at lake margins and in ditches, this Sarracenia... Sarracenia purpurea ..read more

Good evening everyone. I will try to sow Sarracenia seeds soon, and I always wanted cold stratification to make them germinate. Like 4 weekd as shown here. But recently, I read that some sowed directly at harvest and had a good germination rate ... Just to know, which method do you use ? Thanks ..read more

Went up to the cottage to clean up Saturday's mess and finally had a chance to photograph some wild plants! A little rattled by the storm but overall unbothered... this local has some absolute beefcakes, no idea of exact age but I'd put money on over a decade. Loads of plants about to bloom! Hopefully I'll be able... Wild Sarracenia ..read more
