I haven’t written much about the XL bully ban. I wrote on it in the latest issue of Wunderdog, about how it’s jolly convenient to bash a dog breed while the NHS crumbles, Brexit is a certified disaster, the economy is stagnating, and immigration sky-high despite all the rhetoric to the contrary. In a way, the XL bully has become another refugee – a voiceless red herring to distract from the real issues the UK faces.
I put a much-shared post on Instagram calling the Tories the real XL bullies. I stand by it. The rushed ban of a type of dog – not even a definable breed – was a kneej ..read more

This week, the South Korean parliament passed a bill to phase out the dog meat trade by 2027, which presents a monumental victory for animal rights groups that have worked to end this barbaric trade. Humane Society International began campaigning to end the dog meat trade in South Korea in 2015, and director of international media Wendy Higgins was there from the start. She writes for Wunderdog about what this week’s announcement means to her
There are so many different emotions I feel about the dog meat industry in South Korea. Disgust and sadness, obviously. I’ve been to factory farms ..read more

Long known as the patron saint of animals, comedian Ricky Gervais has donated £1.91m to 11 animal charities.
Gervais just finished his latest stand-up tour Armageddon, which has netted £26.4m. His gig at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, in May, alone took £1.4m – enough to get Gervais into the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest gross taking for a single stand-up performance. He raised the money for animal charities by selling platinum tickets for the tour.
Armageddon has also been filmed for Netflix and will be shown from 25 December.

Black dogs tend to spend longer in animal rescue centres than their lighter-coloured canine friends. In the age of social media, could it be that black dogs don’t always stand out on their profile pictures – and pictures is all we see before considering their personality?
I took it upon myself to trawl the websites on some trusted charities to find black dogs ready for their forever homes. Adopt them all! (The dog on the picture above is Cola – scroll to the end for her details.)

The protests against the scheduled UK visit by controversial YouTuber Dog Daddy have brought together renewed condemnation against the disproved ‘alpha’ theory in dog training.
The idea that a dog needs an alpha – otherwise they will dominate you – stems from a poorly set-up study by wolf expert Dr. David Mech. He and his team studied wolves in captivity and noticed that one had become a leader.
But what did Mech expect? This wasn’t a family, this was a randomly assembled group of individuals. Fresher’s Week with a free buffet.
Far too swiftly did this observation become ..read more
