Do you need to brush moss on a roof? How do you remove moss from a shingle roof? Will SH kill roof moss? I often see these questions pop up in groups and most of the times, the answers I see vary pretty wildly. Usually the answer will come in some form of: “Treat moss with X% SH. The Moss will turn white and die but you need to let the customer know that it will take several weeks for the moss to completely detach from the roof and fall off with the weather.” Most the... What is the black staining growing on the roof? Is there Mold growing on the side of this home? What is this green algae? This write up is potentially going to be very niche and maybe a little technical. Let's discuss terminology. When talking about staining on siding to a customer, do you refer to it as Mold? Mildew? Algae? Organic Staining? And is it important to distinguish between them all? One of the most important things you can learn is to stop using the... Read more ..read more

Rooftec Tip: Walking on Tile Roofs

Walking on a tile roof doesn’t have to always lead to damaged tiles. There are places you should and shouldn’t step. It helps tremendously to know how these types of roofs are made to understand this. Always step on the overlapped areas at the bottom of the tiles. This is the part of the tile that’s supported by the structure inside the roof. Never step on the middle of the tiles or on the tiles right in the middle of valleys. Doing this will inevitably lead to roof... Read more ..read more

Hello everyone, I got a call today for an estimate on a house with no gutters. Not just that but, the roof is really steep, pretty dirty, and surrounded by plants. I use a 4% sodium hypo mix with some TSP. Now, I know this will kill the plants or at least do them some damage if I just let it sit in the plant bed. I told the customer that there is a good chance that the plants will be affected but, he still seemed interested (or at least he wants to check if they will really die before... Read more ..read more

Chemical sprayers?

I did a couple of roofs this past year with great results using a pump sprayer, but it just takes to long. Can someone help me with a tank and pump setup that I can leave on my trailer and spray 20 to 30 feet? If I leave the pump on the trailer, I'll need a long hose to reach the back of the house/roof. Will this effect the pump or power of the pump? Would it be easier to have a tank/pump on a Dolly or cart so I can wheel it around with me? thanks for the help ..read more
