Ever heard of Jack audio? For those who haven't, it's an environment for connecting audio (and midi) between applications, processing modules, plugins etc etc. I am using it to experiment with phono equalisation and playback. Screen shot below shows a software equipment rack called Carla at the top left. I have added two configurable filters and an eq module setup for phono eq. Heaps of effects, meters, oscilloscopes, analysers etc etc can also be added (lot's of free plugin modules can be downloaded). Bottom right is the Jack control app and graphical ..read more

Not sure how long this link will stay alive, but it’s for the suspension kit for early Connoisseur BD1 & 2.

If the link is no good, you can rebuild the early motor suspension systems with four orings and three zip ties.
Oring sizes:
3 x 10mm ID 2mm thick
1 x 18mm ID 2mm thick
Zip ties:
100mm long x 2.5mm wide.
I have included two photos in this post. The first is of the top plate of the motor ..read more

Hi All,
I have had this turntable for over 30 years and love it. The motor now makes a bit of a noise. I just add a drop of sewing machine oil and it quietens down. When I remove the platter I can wiggle to pulley a little from side to side. It doesn't seem to affect the sound at all. The motor is the same or similar to a Thorens TD160. which seems to have sintered bronze bushes top and bottom.
Has anyone successfully replaced these?
I have experience working with oilite bearings and understand the difficulty in machining etc.
I was toying with the idea of getting an expert to look at it ..read more

and to further prove it, here's one I restored over the last weeks.
The tonearm 'stem' was broken. This is the plastic vertical bit that fits loosely through a plastic grommet in the motor board, held up by a spring (that allows it to collapse when the lid is closed. It also ripped the tonearm wires apart when it broke. So, superglued three pieces of plastic like a 3D jigsaw puzzle, then filed and sandpapered back to smooth.
I got some low end replacement wires with cartridge clips from Amazon. A bit short but I used the o ..read more

Hi good people
I've got myself one of those chinese ultrasonic cleaners and it is giving me vastly differing results. The internet isn't giving me any particularly good information.
My problem is it appears to be adding surface noise to my records. Clicks and pops and a general whoosh. Not on all records though!
First off I'll address the solution:
6L demineralised water
50ml Ilford Ilfoltol
30ml alcohol
have found plenty of different advise on the solution but all seem to be a variation of the above.
I have tried the following processes:
Vacuum clea ..read more

There's always something new to learn. Just found this 78 record sleeve with this warning on it. I have a couple of these "plastic" 78s, and some are vinyl, but I think some are polystyrene. Never knew they had tried to make them survive older record players.

Slow day here
As I am slowing organising things after a house move, I came to the old Reader's Digest sets I have. Decided to give them a spin while I work.
This is a small set (4) of latin music... nice quality sound despite everything The record changer is a Garrard AT6 with AT3600L magnetic cart.
