Subversive Cross Stitch began in the spring of 2003 as a form of anger management therapy when I was dealing with a bully of a boss. I stitched a few more pieces this way and started sharing the idea with friends through a simple website. Then, suddenly, my site was discovered and started getting a lot of press. So I quickly decided to offer this crafty form of therapy to others through kits.

Three GREAT New Books on Craftivism from the BEST!
Craftivist Collective Handbook by Sarah Corbett of Craftivist Collective
Crafting A Better World by Diana Weymar of Tiny Pricks Project
Let’s Move The Needle by Shannon Downey of Badass Cross Stitch
It’s astounding that THE three people I think of when I think of craftivism have ALL come out with books within the past month or so. And they’re each as unique as their creators, all of which I have considered my sisters in stitching for a long time. With her empathetic angle and thorough instructions, Sarah Corbett shows you ..read more

I have watched Robert Mahar for years from afar with great respect--his work is not only gorgeous but so meticulous! He's clearly out of my slapdash league! ;) I saw a stitched snow globe class he was teaching and asked if he'd have time to create a cross stitched piece for us along the same lines and he came up with this amazing design! We're pre-selling this kit for 3 days only! Learn more about Robert below. He's a dream to work with--you should take one of his classes, they're top-notch.

First of all, they're not telling us anything we didn't already know in this BBC article, but...LOOK AT THAT WALL! Why haven't I done that? Hmmm! The day is still young!
So, technically, they're talking about needlepoint, but of cross stitch has the same basics (and is WAY less expensive). I've talked about this SO many times over the years and it's amazing that so many articles are still coming out about the mental benefits of needlework. YOU know how it is!
"I think it has a lot to do with the fact that people were looking for ways to get off their phones, to get away from the news – which ..read more

I’m so excited to introduce you to Shannon Knowlton, a mixed-media fiber artist in the San Francisco Bay area who uses cross-stitch to celebrate women of the past, present and future.
I discovered her work on Instagram (the algorithm is working!) She has been featured in several publications. Her work has been juried into national exhibitions, and has collectors all over the world.
We are offering giclée prints of seven pieces from her series “The Girls” suitable for framing or send-able as cards. This series is a message of sisterhood: you are seen, you are heard, and yo ..read more

Here's the scoop, right from Cherie:
"I am based in Melbourne Australia, where I work in the local fashion industry as a graphic artist. I work for a children's clothing company at the moment. I design textile prints, and t-shirt prints, mostly. I was a fashion design major at university. I have an English cocker spaniel named Milo. Animals feature in most of my designs, I'm a big animal lover.
My designs are very influenced by the Australian sense of humour - absurdism, irony, and dad jokes. Happy Sloth was started in 2018. I had been doing long hours at work, and I went o ..read more

It all started when I first saw this image:
You could have knocked me over with a feather! I mean—-look at that ingenuity and excellent pattern work! So I set out to find the kit because I just HAD to stitch it. But there WAS no kit, so I found the creator and struck up a conversation about possibly selling this as a kit. Lo and behold, it’s a SERIES!! So, in addition to “Squirrel With A Pearl Earring” (even the title gives me giggle fits) we are also offering kits for these:
“Squirrel Gothic”, “Squirrel David” and “Squirrel Lisa”
I’m FLOORED and feel super lucky to be ..read more

Subversive Cross Stitch, which makes the kit, is one of the more established modern cross-stitch companies, offering hundreds of PDF patterns as well as other kits. The designs tend toward the snarky and oftentimes sweary, so if you’ve been looking forward to stabbing something over and over to express a strongly held feeling, this is the online shop for you.
It’s not every day (or ever, really) that I get a Google alert and lose all sense of time and space. This was a complete surprise: the author, Kase Wickman, bought the kit, stitched it all herself (and very well, check out all the phot ..read more

Meet Subversive Stitcher Kendra! She works as the fish ticket clerk at a salmon processing plant on Bristol Bay. She arrives in early May and works until about August 1. They process sockeye salmon, mostly for the domestic market and by mid-July she’d helped process just over 5 million pounds; last year they did about 8 million, a record year bay-wide.
Kendra says, “It is a crazy business, but I’m (mostly) glad to be part of this still thriving wild fishery!”

Edwin is a longtime Subversive Cross Stitcher who has constantly amazed me with his work--especially his super miniature versions of both his own and our designs on 25-count Lugano fabric! Like the Miniature Middle Finger kit shown above (Chapstick not included, ha). Scattered throughout the intro below you'll see photos of some of Edwin's other work.
PLUS he lives in New Zealand!! AND he's a poet! And a really nice guy with superb wit. So, here's his introduction!:
