LAURA VINCENT DESIGN & GALLERY, Portland, OR Sept. 2 - 30, 2023 Wetland Through Woods, 2023, oil on canvas, 38” x 80” This body of work celebrates the vibrancy and energy of nature. Not only the nature of our world, but of ourselves. Area wetlands provide the jump off point for my paintings, in that they inform my compositions. Rather than leaning into the descriptive elements of the landscape, I use its visual cues to spark exaggerated color interactions applied through interlocking shapes and bold gestures of paint. Throughout the year, I create small sketchbook paintings at a small han ..read more

Got some ink! I'm thrilled to announce that my artwork is featured in the March issue of Plein Air Magazine. I've been a fan of this magazine since its inception and have greatly appreciated its advocacy for the tradition of painting in the great outdoors.  The article, Painting Over Place, by writer Bob Bahr, explores my artistic practice of creating small plein air studies in casein and the evolution of these images into large, more abstracted studio works.  Plein Air Magazine, March 2023 issue Plein Air Magazine is available at Barnes & Noble and other retailers of fine art ..read more

Thoughts on the artistic process.
Scott Gellatly Blog | Colorful, Abstract Landscape Painting

The landscape is my jump-off point. My visual springboard. My point of departure. Throughout this year’s output of studio paintings and monotypes, I continue to reimagine nature's color palette, albeit in ways that are further removed visually from the original source. I have put a greater emphasis on memory and embracing the unpredictability that comes out of the artistic process. I maintain a practice of creating small, sketchbook plein air paintings at nearby wetland areas. I am particularly drawn to the way the richly textured landscape is reflected into adjacent waters, distorting form in ..read more

This year has seen any distinction between “in person” and “online” be challenged, reimagined, and reinvented. Technology has allowed many to maintain livelihoods, now at a safe distance. The art world is no different. Any barriers to buying art online that may have existed in the past are gone. Galleries make little distinction between online and in-person sales channels. Not that this represents an either-or proposition. Thankfully, galleries have worked within guidelines to remain open to the public. I am an oil painter who loves oil paint. While I enjoy viewing works of art online myself ..read more

The over twenty works in the exhibition come from small sketches and studies painted at a wetland area near my home. This area serves as a refuge for migratory birds and other wildlife. It serves as refuge for us as well. This has taken on greater significance during this time, as we seek refuge in our family and homes, we also look to the persevera ..read more

Plein Air through Europe

During the summer of 2018, I was fortunate to spend a month traveling through Europe with my family. Starting in the UK, we made our way through The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Beyond spending time with my family, the food, driving a stick shift over the Alps, the greatest joy was carving out time to paint. I’ve always enjoyed taking in new locations from the view behind an easel. The gallery below chronicles our trip from the English countryside to the streets of Rome. Enjoy!
