I have been friends with artists Nancy Brossard and Charlie King for many years. We all have a passion for oil painting, plein air, and landscapes. When we have the opportunity to paint together, at the same location, we all work intently - and we end up with 3 entirely different paintings!  As we planned this show I tried to think of what it is we do that produces such unique results. I have my ideas - but you'll just have to come to the exhibit, at the Downtown Artists Cellar in Malone, NY, and see for yourself. We do plan to have several groupings of paintings of the same place, as we ..read more

The Disorderly Painting

I recently spent a week as the "local artist" guide for the 100 or so artists who attended the Publisher's Invitational "Paint the Adirondacks" week. We had near perfect weather and a fun schedule traveling around the northern Adirondacks from the Bog River Falls to Rockwell Kent's Asgaard Farm, the Wilmington Flume, High Falls on the Chateaugay River and Heaven Hill Farm outside of Lake Placid. I stared 12 paintings! A couple were pretty much finished on the spot, but the rest will require return trips or work in the studio. It was invigorating and wonderful to spend 7 days painting, and I w ..read more

The Adirondack Plein Air Festival took place Aug 16-21. I'm actually the organizer of it, but I plan things so I can get out and paint too. It was Wednesday the 18th and it had been raining off and on for two days, making it challenging to produce good paintings. One of the activities of the Festival is the Nocturne Contest. Nocturnes, as defined in the dictionary, are paintings done after the sun has set. Often the subject matter is street scenes and buildings, where traffic lights, cars and neon signs add artificial lighting that illuminates the subject matter. I prefer to do landscapes, so ..read more

Tuesday July 20 I will head over to Keeseville to take part in their plein air event, which is part of a Community Arts Celebration. Keeseville is a historic village located near the amazing Ausable Chasm - maybe I'll go paint there. Tuesday - Friday we can paint, and then framed paintings need to be dropped off at the Block Gallery on Front Street. There will be a reception Friday evening and then the work will remain on view Saturday and Sunday.    I used to go to plein air events and do as many paintings as I could - a morning painting, an afternoon painting, an evening painting ..read more

I started this painting in June, but got rained out by thunderstorms. It's the Ausable River from Route 86, north of Lake Placid, at a spot called Monument Falls. Because of the threatening weather, I had worked very fast and actually got the canvas covered in about 30 minutes. Covered the painting and stood in the rain for one brief shower, painted some more, then had to put on the rain jacket and really cover every up and when the lightning flashed, I headed back to my car. It sat in my studio for weeks - I knew it was a good start.   Today was somewhat unscheduled, a bit overcast and ..read more

I was thrilled to have 2 of my watercolors accepted into the Green Mountain National Watercolor Exhibition. Check out this mention in a review of the show (note: my painting is of a Great Blue Heron, not a crane):   A Review Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition Excels   Anyone who harbors the opinion that one has to travel to a large city to view a major art exhibition has not experienced the Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition currently occupying the Red Barn Galleries at Lareau Farm. More than 200 watercolor paintings from across the United States have been gathered through an ex ..read more

Today I hung 28 paintings up at the Paul Smith's College VIC - "A Year in the Life of the VIC", Part II. My first "Year in the Life of the VIC" was in 2004. I displayed 20 some paintings that were all plein air paintings done that year at the VIC. It was a mix of oils and watercolors and I even did one painting on the day of the opening. It was a watercolor and I brought a mat and frame and put it together right after I finished it and hung it in the show in time for the reception.   My 2021 show is all oil paintings, with all but 2 plein air paintings. Only these were done over the cour ..read more

Why I Shouldn't Have a Blog....

I love to write. I love to talk about my  paintings. I love to paint. But I also volunteer too much and can't seem to find the time to do the blog. However I just sent out my email newsletter and I'm just going to link to it right HERE. If I had time to work on the blog, I would have written about what it was like to get out and paint in the spring. The subtle colors of spring are so beautiful and it's finally warm enough to paint without gloves. But I missed spring and now we're moving in the busy summer months. I have my work in 3 shows and in a fit of boredom, after the long pandemic ..read more
