Big Bucks, Smart Riflescopes, and Straight-walled Cartridges.  Hunting with the new Traditions Outfitter G3 chambered in 360 Buckhammer, topped with a Burris Veracity PH scope. 11. The Burris Veracity PH on a Traditions Outfitter G3 rifle Returning to Goose Creek Outfitters last fall, I had grand dreams of repeating success from a wonderful experience with a previous hunt, and finding another big, memorable buck. The Nebraska license allows for one mule or white-tailed buck to be harvested, and there were good opportunities for either. I learned many years ago not to set my sights on one ..read more

Hunting Prairie Bucks

The prairies of the southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Montana and the Dakotas are vast regions of open space and seem to be endless acres of pastures and crop lands. However, if you look closely, you will see these areas also consist of patches of tall native prairie grasslands, slough bottoms, clumps of buck brush, weed choked fence lines, farmyards and small groupings of trees. In addition, many areas of the prairies are rolling landscapes along with potholes, drainage systems and valleys. All of which provide perfect cover for whitetail deer. IF YOU LOOK YOU WILL FIND At first glanc ..read more

The Hunt for Moose: Adventures in Alaska
North American Deer Hunter » Big Game

On the second day of a 10-day moose hunt, I shot a nice bull. Eleven hours later my buddy and I had it broken down and were back in camp. It was my partner’s first moose hunt. Having lived in Alaska for nearly a decade, I’d been on a number of moose hunts, so I knew what to expect. “I could care less if I kill a bull,” my buddy said that night as he crawled into his sleeping bag. The next day, we hung around camp and let our bodies recover. We glassed from a knoll. Moose moved through the river valley below all day long. There were some good bulls, and later that night my buddy came around, re ..read more

So, You Want to Hunt Sheep?

As I made the last few steps up the boulder-strewn mountainside, the big ram came into view. I’d like to say I’d been waiting 32 years for this moment, but I honestly hadn’t. The thought that I’d be walking up on the ram that completed my grand slam only entered my head a few months earlier. It wasn’t something that I aspired to, and while I was familiar with the term and the requirements of completing a grand slam, it was just something that I’d never dare imagine, let alone plan. Yet, here I was, about to place my hand on a desert bighorn—my fourth species required to complete a grand slam o ..read more

Some Lessons Learned About Bear Baiting
North American Deer Hunter » Big Game
by Jeff Helsdon

The bear entered the clearing in front of me in a tentative way. In what seemed like slow motion, it moved toward the barrel. I sat perfectly still, not moving a muscle, waiting for the bear to get to the barrel before I moved. When it reached the barrel and stood on its back legs to reach bait in a pail attached to the tree, I made my move. Slowly and carefully, I raised the Savage rifle to my shoulder. I depended on the silent material of my Redhead coat to stay silent. The bear that came in so tentatively ran out of the clearing at high speed before I could get the scope to my eye. Stepping ..read more

On My Own: How My Solo Moose Hunt Became a Journey of Learning, Resilience and Growth

A halo of snow covered the jagged mountains overlooking Sundre from the west. Southward, the smooth pavement gave way to a weathered dirt road with horses and cattle grazing peacefully in the fields. Tall aspens displayed hues of maroon reds, flaming oranges, and amber yellows—a living masterpiece created by nature. With each passing mile, civilization receded into my rearview mirror and the mountain walls were my guiding companions. The river that ran parallel to the solitary, one-lane road ahead embraced me in a profound sense of inner peace. Its gentle flow whispered secrets of the natural ..read more

My Texas Slam: Deer—Hogs—Coyote—Bobcat

The view from our blind was spectacular! It overlooked a large food plot with a spiderweb of trails leading out of the heavy brush. The blind was concealed in the brushy terrain and was downwind of the main travel corridors. The blind material allowed a full view of the field while being completely camouflaged from the outside. The chairs were comfortable and shooting sticks were strategically placed to shoot in most directions. We were hunting the Lowrance Ranch in West Texas and we knew there were some great bucks in the area. Colton Beam, my outfitter and guide, had shown me photos of a lar ..read more

A Hunter’s Spring: Turkey-Bear Combo Experience
North American Deer Hunter » Big Game
by Jeff Helsdon

Spring brings with it a sense of optimism and opportunity. For hunters, spring means turkey hunting. For large game hunters, bear hunting is the name of the game. The opportunity to bring both together in one trip this spring was new for me. Since their reintroduction in Ontario 39 years ago, turkeys have flourished there, spreading well beyond the bird’s original range. In practical terms, this means turkeys have moved northward. They’re found as far as North Bay and along the north shore of Lake Huron—and into territory that is shared with black bears. Many Ontario outfitters offer bear or t ..read more

The Trials and Tribulations of a First-Time Moose Hunter

At the end of September 2021, my hunting partner and I embarked on an epic trip into Atikaki Provincial Park for a 10-day canoe/backpack moose hunting adventure. With more energy than brains, we headed out and experienced the hardest, yet one of the most fun hunts, I’ve ever been on. As all questionable plans do, this one started in the cold heart of winter with a daydream about moose hunting. Bored and somewhat paralyzed by minus 40-degree weather, I sent my hunting partner a simple text that read, “MOOSE HUNT!!!!?” It was answered within seconds, with an even simpler, “Obviously!” And so, th ..read more

Texas Hog Hunting Means Lots of Options
North American Deer Hunter » Big Game

In Texas, hog hunting is year-round with no seasons, no bag limits and no restrictions on the methods of harvest. Traveling hunters don’t even need a license to hunt them on private land now. But if there were a season to pick a time, it would be right after the close of the general deer season. The weather is chilly and yes, it does get cold here in the Lone Star State. Wild porkers are fattened up from eating the hard mast crops such as acorns, pecans and hickory nuts, as well as corn supplied in large quantities by deer hunters via their corn feeders. There is no better time to come to Texa ..read more
