I have been trying to ID this rock I happened upon. For whatever reason, I just like this thing and as a result I would love to know what it is. I have tried a few apps with varying answers. Found in CT. It does not appear to be translucent or glow under UV light. Not sure what else would help. Thanks ..read more

Breccia

This piece of breccia came from an old gravel pit along the river. There are several pits that are no longer used but there’s still a lot of rock laying around. I thought it had potential so I polished a window in the end. So far so good. Next I cut a 1/4” slab and cut out two 30x22 cabs. Here is the one on left all polished. I’m wondering what the gemy looking red stones are.? Not bad for a rock from the gravel pit ..read more

Slabbing Flint

This was my first time slabbing flint. I put in a good sized nodule of Wyandotte chert from Harrison Co IN, aka IN hornstone. I had to trim it down to fit in the vise. My new saw will cut a slab 6” X 5”. After taking off a wide slab of cortex I was greeted by a bunch of cracks. I cut a slab 3/8”, which is the right thickness for flintknapping. The red lines are cracks, the green area looks solid. I put my knapping billet on it and the cracks failed... Read more ..read more

Oregon Sunstones

Chris and I got cabin fever in April, and decided to go over to Oregon, and take a look at the public Sunstone collection area. One of only two places in the world that have clear plagioclase feldspar crystals. On top of that Oregon's have copper inclusions in them that give the gems "schiller" a sort of natural sparkle or brilliance. They're just lying on the ground in plain sight. You can dig for them, or just wander around. The area set aside for the public is 4 square miles of mostly... Read more ..read more
