Not wanting to wear a thermal suit because you think it’s going to make you too buoyant to do breast stroke? Or maybe it’s just that you prefer to have your cold immersion therapy?   I’m one of those outdoor swimmers who loves to be able to feel the water and enjoys the tingle of the cold water but this winter I’m setting myself a different challenge. Having had a partial knee replacement earlier this year I’m working to get my fitness back. My challenge this winter is to push myself with distance and increase my cardiovascular fitness. As the temperatures are starting to drop I thou ..read more

Generally, I’m a “skins” swimmer even in the winter but having been hampered with injuries over the last 12 months resulting in a partial knee replacement, this year I’m considering donning a wetsuit to get my fitness levels up again and swim longer distances throughout the winter. As I have access to a large number of wetsuits I thought I'd try the Orca Zeal HiVis Open Water Wetsuit as this suit is designed to give increased insulation and better sealing which would definitely be a benefit in the winter if you are wanting to stay in the water for longer.  It sparked a bit of in ..read more

Huntingdonshire has many delightful walks and parks and unbeknown to many, some beautiful swim spots too. Having a river flowing through the town obviously provides many different places to enter and exit the water but as a disabled swimmer I can’t use all of them. However, I am luckier than some as I still have multiple spots to choose from, below is a list of my top 5 spots in Huntingdonshire: Godmanchester Portage point – visual.questions.tango In Godmanchester there are 2 portage points, one either side of the lock but only one is an easy entrance for me. To get to this spot you have a r ..read more

Do I Need a Tow Float?
Tri Wetsuit Hire Blog

I am often asked questions about why I always swim and insist the people that I am coaching in open water swim with a tow float. Some say you don’t need them and it is just being over cautious but I believe it should be in every open water swimmers kit bag along with their hat and goggles - they’re just as important! Swimming with a tow float is for safety, it is not supposed to be used as a floatation device that you can hold onto to rest but it is used for visibility. Most people locally (Cambridgeshire) swim in the local lakes or more often, the Great River Ouse or the ..read more

How A Wetsuit Works by Blue Seventy

A wetsuit is a neoprene insulation suit made for warmth and protection in the water. Wetsuits work by trapping a thin layer of water between your body and the suit. This layer of water is warmed by your body which prevents you from losing too much heat while in the water. Water molecules conduct energy (heat) 25-40 times faster compared to air molecules. For example, on a 60-degree day you probably feel comfortable outdoors with jeans and a shirt whereas you will probably start to shiver within minutes while swimming in the same temperature water. Wetsuits are not meant to keep you entirely dr ..read more

Swimming micro-adventure in the Lake District with a Ruckraft

I have always loved adventure – especially in remote places where you can plan and pull off a multi-day, self-contained journey. In popular parts of the UK, it can be hard to find places that feel this remote – but all I needed was a plan, a place and some buddies to join me. Lining all these elements up together initially proved to be difficult. The proposed dates didn’t mesh in with friends that were keen to join me, but after a bit of a rethink, a solo trip to the Lake District was born: a night swim with an overnight bivvy using a Ruckraft – a piece of kit that transforms your rucksack int ..read more
