Construction sites are notoriously hazardous, with workers facing a myriad of risks daily. Among these dangers, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) stand out as particularly severe, with construction workers sustaining more TBIs than employees in any other sector in the United States. This alarming statistic underscores the critical need for effective head protection on construction sites. Historically, hard hats have been the cornerstone of construction safety gear. Originating from simple leather and canvas designs, hard hats have undergone significant evolution to meet the increasing demands ..read more

The project to rehabilitate adjoining 100-year-old berths at the Port of Lake Charles was thrown a considerable curve ball when Hurricane Laura roared through the site during the pre-construction phase. Everything was put on hold for the better part of a year, as the damaged port focused on repairs to its infrastructure.  Fortunately, the project’s Construction Management at Risk (CMAR) contractual arrangement had already made great strides in building a collaborative team, which enabled them to swiftly pivot in the face of the escalating material prices and supply chain logjams that fol ..read more

Several drainage swales were rapidly eroding at Southern University’s Baton Rouge campus this past fall and threatening a heavily used Student Health Center and residential parking lot. There were also alarming signs that one of the drainage swales was about to undermine an electrical transformer foundation. Given the urgency, Huval & Associates turned to Boh Bros. Construction for help with a quick solution. The Lafayette-based engineer holds the emergency contract with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the overseer of the state-funded project. “The issue was br ..read more

The lights went out nearly everywhere in New Orleans when Hurricane Ida tore through southeast Louisiana last August. The winds were blowing more than 150 mph as the storm brushed the city, damaging an Entergy tower along the Mississippi River at Avondale. In a matter of days, though, Entergy’s team of emergency electrical contractors had impressively and swiftly erected a temporary solution and restored power. Nevertheless, they knew a more permanent fix would be needed. When the time came, the electrical provider chose to replace both the tower in Avondale as well as its sister tower on the ..read more

Moving Target: Unreliable ‘as-builts’ require a malleable approach to Metairie Causeway overpass repair There were no easy answers during the recent refurbishment of an aging Causeway Boulevard overpass in Metairie. The elevated structure and associated ramps spanning Airline Highway were in dire need of substructure repairs, and Boh Bros. Construction had to find a way to do it under heavy traffic with old and potentially inaccurate “as-builts,” all under a tight timeline. On its face, the work seemed fairly straightforward. The $13.5 million project called for the spans to be raised above t ..read more

All of us at Boh Bros. were saddened by the passing of Dale Biggers, P.E., a prominent figure at Boh Bros. for more than 50 years. Dale spent 33 years as a project manager completing hundreds of projects, including piles for the Superdome and the Aquarium. In 2001, he was named piling and marine department manager and served a key role in the recovery of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. A vice president since 2003, Dale’s presence in the halls of Boh Bros., his depth of knowledge, and his wonderful sense of humor will be missed. Dale is survived by his wife Virgene and daughter Eva ..read more

Boh Reinforces Fire-Damaged I-10

The intense heat generated by a September tractor-trailer rig accident and fire on I-10 eastbound into New Orleans had spalled and cracked the elevated span’s concrete superstructure, and LADOTD needed a quick fix. While the span’s girders still provided sufficient support, a structural analysis determined that additional support was needed until a full assessment could be performed. Engineer Huval & Associates of Lafayette and LADOTD universally agreed that the fastest and least invasive approach would be to add steel “assist girders” to the underside of the span to reduce loads on the ..read more
