The shapes and lines of cars have fascinated me since I have been a child. When my partner and I opened our automotive studio in 2016 we ended up doing a lot of advertising and commercial photography for many car brands. Although we enjoyed this journey we were determined to take our car photography to the next level and we started playing with the idea of fine art car photography. We wanted to create a lighting technique that brings out the shapes and details of a car’s design, in order to reveal that which tends to not be seen when we just look at at a car. This lead to the development of t ..read more

Introduction Photography is a journey which for us has resulted in a never-ending process of learning. The ever-changing competitive industry we work in requires continued growth not only in our technical skill set, but also in our creative expression. Photographers need to find new ways to stay ahead of the pack. All too often this growth process is equipment driven or directed by trends. Although these have merit, we have learned early in our respective journeys that great photography is often the result of the ability to see, as well as a solid understanding of the characteristics of light ..read more

Someone once said: “photography is a journey”. It is a never-ending dynamic and mostly exciting process of learning and growth. My personal journey with car fine art images started five years ago when Sarel, my partner, suggested that my affinity for contemplative photography as well as strong simple compositions be re-directed to automotive work. I have always loved cars, however, my love for cars is a little different than that of the average petrolhead…I love car designs - the art in the shape of cars. As commercial photographers in South Africa, we had come to realise that the automotive p ..read more

We have always been drawn to Pagani. Except for the obvious reason that these cars are moving works of art, much of the attraction is due to the design philosophy and the personal story of Horatio Pagani, the man behind this iconic 20 year old brand. There are many references on the internet to the fact that Pagani regards each of his cars as an art work. Each one is bespoke and hand made in their new factory near Modena, in the heart of what Italians refer to as Motor Valley. Pagani takes much of his inspiration from Leonardo Da Vinci resulting in cars that are the perfect balance between en ..read more

The ongoing debate… Could PHOTOGRAPHY be art?

The dictionary definition: Art is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power”. A very superficial application of this definition could make a case that a photograph could be art, as it is made through the application of human creative skill and imagination to be appreciated for its beauty and emotional power. Historically the debate went a little deeper when some scholars argued that a photograph is produced by the application o ..read more

Car Fine Art - an introduction:

More often than not, we answer the question “But, why cars?” with the easy short answer: “because we love cars”. In essence this is the truth, but as with most photography or art for that matter, there is a lot more to it than just that. It is always easy and tempting to get lost in a philosophical and lyrical contemplation on muses or inspiration on the one hand, but on the other, there is the option to explore the process of making the images and hopefully bringing new insights in the creative process from the photographers’ (our) perspective. The interesting thing is, although we are a team ..read more
