If I Had One Word to Describe Saltburn it Would Be Visceral Saltburn, the second feature film from award-winning director, writer, actor, and producer Emerald Fennell does not disappoint. And in a counterintuitive move, I implore you to stop reading this review to go watch it in cinemas first to have the freshest experience possible. I knew barely anything about this movie going in and was incredibly glad for that fact. Despite the incredible marketing, Saltburn is a film best experienced completely out of your depth. Whilst I shall attempt to keep my review here as spoiler-free as possib ..read more

Patriarchy, Feminism, and Barbie I had zero expectations walking into the cinemas to see Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Even after a monster of a marketing campaign, some of which I was actually a part of by both using meme generators on social media and working as a camera operator for a pink carpet event that live-streamed on TikTok. All around me, the question on everybody’s lips was, “Are you going to see the Barbie movie?” The perception of what this film would be fell into two categories; blindly optimistic and apathetically judgmental. I can confidently say I was part of the former group and st ..read more

In 2019 I worked with the European Film Promotion who bring the annual Europe! Voices of Women in Film program to the festival every year. I got to pre-screen some of the films and interview the directors which was an awesome experience. On the flip side, I reviewed the films from the comfort of my own couch in ..read more

Do Aesthetic Only Films Have Any Value?

As A Visual Medium Shouldn't Film Focus More On Its Aesthetics? I have been a big fan of Melanie Martinez since her first album was released in 2015. Her cutesy aesthetic and sound contrasting dramatically with the dark subject matter of her music. In 2019 she released a new album K-12 along with a full 90min film of the same name, which she also wrote and directed. It has taken me a while but I finally watched it and let’s just say there is quite a lot to unpack here. This may seem a bit of a left turn for this blog to review what is essentially a super long music video but as the film deals ..read more

taking a critical lens to this famous film criticism Watch the Video Version of this blog here I think when anybody starts to study feminism and film one of the first names to come up on their radar is Alison Bechdel. Derived from her 1985 comic strip titled The Rule; where two women discussing films comment on the lack of good representation of female characters, The Bechdel Test was originally meant as a bit of a joke and more of a comment on the alienation of queer women in cinema [1]. Since its conception, the test has been used to categorise a film’s feminist qualities. With many films at ..read more
