Experiences with Red Whiptails

Hi all!  Recently, in one of his fish room updates, Cory mentioned that he and Dean had been interested in the Red Whiptail Catfish. I had been considering these, so I did a bit of research. A lot of articles that I had found seemed slightly unreliable, and many possibly had anecdotal evidence. Some said that they were super easy to breed, and others said that they were fairly difficult. So I wanted to ask, if you've bred these guys, how did you do it, and what were your experiences with them like ..read more

Box for breeding

Hi guys. I have an ikea box, 40x30x15 cm or so. I use it to store leftover plants now, i have a sponge filter available and I was wondering: Can I put a trio of sterbai corydoras and hope for a breeding action? Other fish that I have and could try if sterbais would not work are: ember tetras, rummynose tetras, few pygmy corydoras, least rasboras. Everything else is either too big or too young or I don't want to breed that (white cloud minnows)   Thanks!           ..read more

Hi everyone!   One of our Cory’s has laid eggs and we’ve never had eggs before so I’d really appreciate suggestions on what to do! I’d love to give them the best chance of survival.   We’ve had them for about a year and no eggs, but we transferred everyone into a much larger, more varied and more planted aquarium so I’m hoping this is a sign that they’re happy!   Absolutely any advice at all appreciated. I’m not sure if this is useful information but have molly’s, neon tetra, cherry barbs, Kigali loaches, a few types of Cody’s, some snails and a few shrimp. Lots of plants, sand ..read more

I got ahold of the rainbowfish legend himself, Gary Lange via band app about a month ago and I bought 3 pairs of Melanotaenia sp Kali Tawa or “Tawa village” rainbowfish directly from him! I PAID for them haha, but from my understanding they are extremely rare, and considered one of the “holy grail” rainbows at the moment. I have successfully spawned and raised bosemani, turquoise, and Blythe river rainbowfish before, and I plan to try to spawn these beautiful fish asap. I am very excited about the project ..read more

Thought I would share some fish breeding successes that I have had over my short time keeping fish. Maybe it will help others, and it will probably keep me from forgetting how I bred some fish later on in life. I'll go year by year to start, but might go more often depending on how much fish breeding I have done. 2020 Fish Room Status: 2 tanks I was in my last semester of uni and was bored out of my mind in quarantine. My roommate had got a saltwater tank in January and I decided that I should convert my snake tank to a fish tank since the snake had long escaped(my roommates were not happy wit ..read more

Sad Platy or Unlikely Oto?

I saw this little fellow in the tank today and wondered if it might be a baby Otocinclus. I have otos in a community tank that currently includes a herd of platy fry. Actually, there is always a herd of platy fry. I noticed this little guy today on a piece of decor. At first, I thought it was a deformed or sickly platy fry, but then I noticed how it moved. It just went from plant to hardscape to plant, resting occasionally. It didn't swim around in constant motion as the plates do.  I've had otos for a few years but have never had them breed before (as far as I know).  Does anyone kn ..read more

Looking for tips and tricks on breeding these guys. I’ve heard they’re easy but my male seems to be quite overzealous and the females not interested. They were all separated and conditioned all are fat and happy and eating lots of live foods.  ..read more
