Hi there, I'm Karen! I'm the owner and designer of Blooming Poppies Modern Quilts and currently wearing all the many hats needed to run this small business. My first love of designing with fabric is quilting! I adore the process of creating a functional yet artful item for the home and body. I was recently asked to create a quilt for a new baby that would be arriving this summer. When the client told me the nursery would be peaches, green and gold, well, how could I resist?
She wanted something delicate and whimsical for the baby girl she would be gifting it to.
She also asked that it be scrappy and an original, not from any of my patterns! Okay, then, it was time to dust off my Scrappy Strings HST method and get to work.
Usually I use 100% scraps for this method. Since I was low on the perfect colors and prints requested for the quilt, I use ..read more

I released the Twin Lakes Quilt Pattern back in 2022! Now almost two years later, I am excited to be re visiting it with some variations that I think can easily provide some added dimension and visual interest.
The original cover version uses just 4 colors and a background fabric. While I'm all for a limited palette and keeping things minimal, sometimes it's fun to add just a bit more variety. So grab your Twin Lakes pattern and have a look with me!
There is a very straightforward and easy way to add these simple variations without having to ..read more

It's actually not all that crazy to say that this Harken quilt practically made itself! From choosing the fabrics, to piecing, to quilting and binding, it was all just so effortless and super fun!
This scrappy Harken Quilt will definitely go down as one of my all time favorites!
I started with a color inspiration that came to me while doing a random puzzle with my daughter. This happy and comforting little scene just captured my heart and I wanted to re create the vibe through my next Harken quilt.
I started gathering from my stash and went to me local fa ..read more

I'm so happy to share that my original tutorial from 2012, then called Scrappy Hot Pad Tutorial, has been rewritten. The 2.0 version is updated with better photos, more examples, clearer instructions and options for how to make it fit your needs.
When I first wrote this tutorial, I was only using these little minis as hot pads. It wasn't until I started gifting them that I realized they were more versatile than I thought. I would go to my friends/family's homes and notice that their "hot pads" were being used as small place mats, framed as textile art, table triv ..read more

When I first created these minis back in 2011 or 12 - yikes, that's a long time ago, they were very popular among my friends and family. People were asking if I could make some for them to give as gifts or they wanted some for themselves, or both!
This was in my early blogging days and even though writing tutorials was not "my thing", I decided this little quilted improv project was worth sharing. So I put together a tutorial, and slapped it up on my little blog! Whoa, was I surprised with the positive feedback and interest!
This was a project people reall ..read more

Fat eighths are a great way to build up your stash for that next scrappy project. They can be just the right size for so many projects that a full fat quarter might just be a bit too much for. They're an affordable and fun way to add variety and color to your stash.
So what is a fat eighth you ask? A fat eighth is a piece of fabric that is 9" x 21 to 22" in dimension. Unlike a 1/8 yard a fabric which is 4.5" x 42" - long and narrow, a fat eighth is, well, fat and short. This allows for lots of versatility and sometimes, less fabric waste.   ..read more

Hey there, did you hear the news? The Road Trip Pattern got a much needed makeover my friends! She was looking a bit tired and wasn't quite as shiny as she could be. So I gave her the full treatment and she is back in action! Oh, and I have a fun question for you at the end of this post. I'd love to hear from you!
So this was the second pattern I wrote (the first one was so bad, I couldn't bear to keep it out in the world) back in 2017/18. Since then it has somehow become one of my bestselling patterns. I love this charming little beginner friendly pattern ..read more
