Author: Lost n confused Subject: Anyone get out today?? Posted: 17 Apr 2024 at 10:29pm Unplanned family trip to napier today and found out we were staying by the beach. Dropped into the local hamills for a cheap rod and the guy there suggested a new (to me) type of bait and was spot on, got the first gurnard in about 10 minutes! I wasn't expecting to get any bites as the beach seems so featureless but it was good fun in good calm weather. Will try again tomorrow to see what shows up in the daylight ..read more

Micro jigs might be a better way to go, they cast better and many of them are designed for casting off the rocks. Things that come to mind: - Long soft baiting rod for long casts, 8 - 10 feet. In reality, this is quite a specialist bit of kit and it may be hard to track down anything longer than 8 feet in NZ. It will need to cast 1oz. - Braid 100% I'd go as light as possible for long casts. 15lb or less. You'll need to learn to tie a good braid to leader knot. - Reel.
