I use high end English and European rods for the majority of my surf fishing and find rod around the 13' to 14 foot length afford the most versatility along with user ease. I usually use sinkers near the top of that range - when you get it set up, buy a few cheap sinkers of different sizes and try casting with each one. You'll feel when it's right.
