We're renting a house in Nags Head for a week in mid September. Haven't been to OBX since the '70's. I haven't surf fished in decades, but still have some tackle. Specifically, I have a Penn 850SS spinning reel that I need to match up to a rod. Back in the day, at Montauk Point, we used 12 to 13 foot rods for stripers and blues. Not sure I want to wield a rod like that anymore, so what's available? Weight wise, do I want medium or heavy? Suggestions? Just looking for an all around surf rig...

Hey guys, like it says, I'm trying to get setup for surf fishing...just seeing all these photos recently of giant blues has fanned the flame to want to do more surf fishing.
Right now I have an older Pinnacle Coastal CBF 60 reel that I was going to use, but had some smartasses tell me just to throw it out and buy blah, blah, blah and that what not the help I was looking for.
I'd like some opinions on what to consider as far as rods go and maybe different reel setups....i will probably be...

The drive down was nice as we stopped for the flight of beer at the Weeping Radish. As we drove by the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk the sky was all red and flush.
We checked into our room and about an hour later some guy starts banging on our door about parking in his spot.
My buddy Steve stopped by for the weekend and what a surprise it was to see him. His wife was just at our house and kept the trip a secret.
Next day I hit the beach at...

My longest surf casting rods are only 15 footers. I use 8 oz sinkers but I need to cast much further - at 120 yards out the water is still fairly shallow with the constant breakers stirring up the sand... any thoughts on longer rods? I would like to find 20 to 30 footers ..read more

I'd like to get a multi-piece surf rod and reel for travel. They don't need to be a combo and I could pull a reel off of one of my existing setups. The main thing I want that I don't have now is something I can break down into shorter sizes. I presently have a 9 foot 2 piece rod that I use in the surf, and a 1 piece custom 10 foot rod for shark. I'd like something in the 9-12 foot range, preferably 4 piece, or at least 3, for break-down for convenient travel. For 15 - 30...

We started down to Buxton NC on New Years Eve in some rain and warm temps.
Stopped at Weeping Radish for a couple of flights.
We arrived at our Hotel and sat in some 70 degree weather watching the rain fall. Enjoyed some drinks and our neighbors company. At about 6:45 an older lady named Rota comes over and introduces herself and shakes our hands. In a quick swift moment she says she is down in Buxton for the wildlife and the great...

Looking for a longer surf casting rod - mine are only 15 footers... anyone have experience with making their own from bamboo? I assume cutting down a 40 foot bamboo and making a 25 foot casting rod out of it might work? I cannot think of any other way getting a 20 to 30 foot pole ..read more
