Skiwelt - most places not accepting card payments

Heads up; 2024 - most places in the Skiwelt will no longer accept card payment, they want cash only. Lots of places have cash machines outside, but the rate is not good. If you have a debit card that allows you to draw cash with no penalties you can get cash from official bank machines but most of them have a transaction fee of around 3 euros for any withdrawal. I am told that the locals are fed up with the amount banks are charging when customers pay by card, so they are demanding cash to thwart the banks. So, come prepared ..read more

Ischgl - at long last

Somewhere I have often looked at but found holiday costs to get there on a package restrictive, and limited availability for accommodation DIY. However, last week I cancelled a cycling week in Tenerife and swapped it for a ski week in Ischgl (courtesy of TUI allowing free amends) early Jan. Initially very excited, and then the realistic thoughts kicked in (same as anyone going anywhere I guess): Will we be in a lockdown situation come that time of winter here in the UK? Will Austria have adopted restrictions in resort that could impact the skiing? Will there be a limit to the number of lif ..read more

Vaccine mandates in Austria?

Hi, Thinking of going to Niederau late January, however I know Austria was one of the worst places for Covid vaccine mandates until recently. I've only had two jabs, and not planning on having any more (for various reasons) however my son has not had any. What is the likelihood of Austria re-imposing mandates this winter? Also, I'm not going anywhere that they insist on facemasks (I'm supposed to be on holiday) and I know Germany are still quite hot on that. I'm medically exempt, but as I'll have to travel through Germany to get there on the train, I'm not sure how accepting they are of tha ..read more

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for Skiing over Christmas in Austria. Typically go twice a year, but always a week at end of January and end of February, and we typically go high like Solden, Mayrhofen etc. This time its with kids, so I'm trying to get an idea of where else would be good last week of December (other than resorts mentioned) from December 26th on? Especially accessible from Munich or Salzburg. Thanks ..read more

Ischgl - worth skiing a day in Galtür, Kappl, or See?

We're going to Ischgl on 29 Jan 2022 for a week. We're advanced-level skiers who like carving reds, steep blacks, off-piste (in the right conditions), hearty lunches, and good scenery. Should we stick to Ischgl/Samnaun for all 6 days, or do you think we'd appreciate a day's skiing in either Galtur, Kappl, or See? If so, which of the three would you recommend, given our stated preferences? Many thanks ..read more

Food in Austria?

Hi, I'm gluten and dairy intolerant, and looking on some web sites it seems like ALL the food on offer up the mountain or in resort is dumplings, pastries or bread-based!! (I'm not celiac so I won't be that bad if I get the occasional little bit) https://www.biffenskitchen.com/austrian-ski-food/ This will be my first time on the slopes in a German speaking country, will I be able to get something like in France which is basically a sausage and frites? (Is that Fritten?) I have been trying to learn a little German for the past six months, and I've got as far as being able to say "Konnen Sie ..read more

Ladies and Gents, I'm in resort in Jan, the hotel I have booked wants 60 euros for the week for a ski locker, and it's not in the hotel! Any other options that people have used and can recommend? I can see some options at the bottom and top of the main lift but just wondered if there is a hidden gem I dont know about. Thanks all, and happy snow fun! Phil ..read more
