What micro fauna eats only decaying plant matter?

So I have two breeder box's that I have filled with aquasoil and use to grow terrestrial plants. Some of the roots of the plants have decayed and I was wondering what micro fauna I can add that will eat the decaying litter. I tried pond snails but that was a huge mistake as they have now escaped into my main tank (it's fine I have methods of removing them if they get out of hand). I can't use scuds because if they too were to escape they would eat the plants in my main tank and possibly... Read more ..read more

Morning! This is my first post, I'm fairly new to aquariums and am rapidly on my way to becoming obsessed with planted tanks . I'm interested in getting the whole biome balanced and have four tanks with a mix of Cherry Shrimp, Amano, Nerites, Assassins and various hardy nano fish. I am on very soft tap water, on the edge of Exmoor, with KH/GH of 2/2.5. pH is 6.5. I have put some crushed coral in my filter, which is helping a bit, but I'm still worried about my inverts not getting... Read more ..read more

Pre-treating a shrimp tank

My nano shrimp tank is almost ready. I’ve got plants growing in, plenty of moss and some healthy tannins. Lots of detritus and leaves. Some snails from the pond have been on algae duty for a few weeks now and I’ve got one or two invertebrates scooting about. Seems like a nice home so far. One thing concerns me though: I have seen at least one flat worm making its way across the glass. He didn’t have the pointed arrow head of a planaria worm but I don’t know what it is really. I’d like to... Read more ..read more

My 60L Nano used to have hundreds of shrimps in it but just recently there aren’t that many. The Corydoras are doing fine though. I’m not actually that bothered by the shrimps at the moment. The reason being that nearly all of them were their natural pinky brown colour. The original shrimps I bought were colourful but I made the mistake of buying a couple of different colours. It was a bit of a quandary as I couldn’t just cull the less colourful ones. I’m now thinking of letting... Read more ..read more

Hello All. So, 2 months in to the new aquascape all is growing well. Today I have noticed a bunch of unusual creatures coming through the substrate. I'm sure I have seen these on a previous thread, but I can't seem to find it now. I have zebra snails, which are laying eggs and we have a few babies, but these things are very different. I have 75 or so cherry shrimp and a dozen or so amanos. What are theses little white blobs. They appear to have antenna and the biggest is about 3mm long. Are... Read more ..read more

Hey everyone, I've been starting on my first planted tank and today I saw a worm and I can't quite tell which it is. If you guys could help me identify I'd appreciate it. I don't think I see an arrow head and this is the best my crappy phone could do photo wise. If i can get better ones I'll add them. It won't let me post the video. (Don't mind the snail I spooked him with the flash) Think this is a harmless little guy or a vicious predator ..read more

Hellooooo! I was just moving some of my Bristlenose Babies from my community tank to prepare for my LFS. Then I saw something in the water that looked like a parasite. Finally i've removed it, and managed to film it. Now i'm thinking, is it possibly an Armano ..read more

Would welcome recommendations for shrimp lollies, available in the UK, for amano shrimp. Also, will fish try to eat from the sticks too? (bentosi tetra, SAE, corys, WCMM, balloon ram (latter added to this list for completeness - in practice the most useless feeder in the world)). Many thanks ..read more

So after starting with a colony of 20 bloody marys im down to the same name number. I did have over 70, and they were thriving. I have not changed anything that i am aware of so scratching my head wondering why. Its most if not all the juveniles all the adults are fine with some berried females. Just found another now laying on its side, but when i gently stirred next to it it came upright and swimming around although looks like its suffering with lack of buoyancy. No other outward signs...
