Hello all! My husband and I are solidifying our itinerary, but we’re running into snags with perceived assumptions about how the lanchas in Lake Atitlan run. I’m seeing different information about their schedules, but I seem to be getting one concept down for certain: if you do not catch the last lancha out of town, you are in the village for the night. I am hearing conflicting views about the specifics of the lanchas. The person with whom we have booked our cooking class since they run on a consistent schedule. However, other sources the watches will only only depart once they are filled. I a ..read more

This snippet was interesting: "So, imagine the disappointment when you're at a Mexican restaurant and realize that the bland sauce you're dipping your protein into is glaringly store-bought and contains artificial ingredients that leave a weird aftertaste." Hi all. We are thinking of going back to Mexico sometime in November. Won't be able to go for Day of the Dead unfortunately--timing not good for my husband's work. We are 70 yo active people who have been to Mexico many times and we are looking for our next area to explore. We could always go back to Oaxaca, as that is a favorite, but would ideally like to go somewhere new to us. We have been to Mexico City, Guanajuato, Patzcuaro, Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta, Merida, Campeche, Valladolid . We have been along the coast from Manzanillo/ Barra de Navidad a lot when our kids were little. We like histo ..read more

We are slower travelers, so we are planning to go to Antigua and Lake Atitlan (we'll got to Tikal another trip). We were hoping to do the following activities: 1-1.5 days in Antigua Walk around and see the architecture, maybe the art museum 5-ish days in Lake Atitlan Go to San Juan, San Pedro, Panajachel, and Santa Cruz Nature Reserve in Panajachel Birdwatching Hiking Indian Nose Weaving class Coo ..read more

Thanks to all of you who have provided input on our second trip to Mexico. I though I would post our final itinerary as it may be of some interest to other planning Mexico trips. We leave from London mid October via Madrid. The reason for flying via Madrid is that it used half the Avios points and cost half the taxes to fly business class with Iberia from Madrid compared with direct from London via BA. The saving in taxes alone covered the cost of LHR-MAD flights and Madrid hotels. This final version is radically different from where I started. I found it very difficult to plan, partly becau ..read more

My husband and I are considering going to Guatemala for a week in December 2024. We would spend one day in Antigua and 5-6 in Lake Atitlan. I saw that the state department of the U.S. put travel at level 3. Has anyone traveled recently, and have they felt safe in the tourist areas? Thanks ..read more

Sure, here's a draft for your forum post Hello fellow travelers, My friends and I are planning a 19-day trip to Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, and we would love your advice on our itinerary. We are a group of seven males, aged 39-40, looking for a mix of beach relaxation and nature adventures. Our budget is around $2,000 per person for the entire trip (excluding flights). Here’s our current itinerary: **Day 1 (Jan 19): Arrival in Cancun, Mexico** - Arrive in Cancun at noon, settle in, explore briefly or relax. **Day 2-3 (Jan 20-21): Tulum, Mexico** - Travel to Tulum (2-hour drive from Can ..read more

Hello, We'll be arriving at the Juan Santamaria International airport @ 10:30pm. So, we're wondering if there are shuttle services (or taxi) we can get at that hour to drive us to our accommodations (which we have not yet secured), or if we would need to stay in San Jose for the night before heading out the next day? We believe we would be staying at least 30 min from the airport, but could be as much as 2 hours. We haven't landed on a specific location yet (recommendations?) If there are shuttle/taxi services, we would like to travel to a location where we could rent a car there, but return ..read more
