Added these to my growing museum collection. I have never used these machines before. I just like the old ones. I picked up 5 machines as a lot locally last year. Nothing special, but they are just cool because they still work. Only one of the crossfire coils worked. I found a used 10" Hothead coil online for a little over 30 bucks shipped. I will see how it works on these. Single tone machines, no pinpoint button, very simple. Check out the original price tag on the GTA350 lol ..read more

Got a NEL "Snake" coil for the Apex. It is 6.5" x 3.5" DD. In preliminary nail board testing, it performs better than the "Sharp" 5" DD. The toughest position and direction for any detector is Coin at #2, direction #4. With this coil, both #4 directions ring out about as well as any other direction! I was pleasantly surprised. I was actually looking for another 5", but they seem to be discontinued. The total area of the Snake is actually a little smaller than the Sharp ..read more

New Garrett PI Nugget Detector Coming July 26th (46 replies)

This should be interesting. Minelab could use some serious competition in the nugget detecting world. I am hoping this new machine is a result of Garrett Buying Whites out. I am hoping its the Half Sine Wave Hybrid machine Whites couldn't seem to get to market. The first prototype of this machine was well spoken of by tester on the gold fields ..read more

You can get lucky at times. The initial post was removed, but I can share that the fellow borrowed his wife's new-to-her detector w/5" coil to hunt renovation dirt. The detector was basically new and different to him, but he successfully found a mid-1800's Seated Liberty Half. Monte ..read more

I have spent a lot of time watching all sorts of You Tube and other videos. Hunting in the USA, the UK and elsewhere (if I can understand what they say), with some being modern or currently made, and others from the past 4-7 years. I am not talking about the videos done to promote or sell a particular make or model detector. I am talking about people out for a good time just metal detecting. Plowed fields, forests, old town sites, parks, yards, you name it, just metal detecting hobbyists doing what they enjoy. What I have noticed is that everyone seems to be finding good targets at similar de ..read more

Was watching a video on these older garret detectors on utube . And this person was testing the Garrett master hunter cx . He conducted a few test regarding depth and id’s on a few targets . Than he did a nail board test and it seemed like the cx hit target at all angles and all directions . Am I seeing or missing something . I’ve seen videos of more modern detectors not hitting the target in certain directions ..read more

And also or the other great Z-Lynk accessories, to include the MS-3 wireless Headphones and the AT ProPointer. I can't forget the Apex that also comes standard with the built-in Z-Lynk Transmitter. Ever since I got my first Apex with the MS3 Headphones and then bought the Z-Lynk AT ProPointer, it has made my detecting experience a lot more comfortable. Not only the very lightweight and well balanced Apex, but the ability to hunt without corded headphones that can tangle on some of the brushy sites I search, but the ability to hear the Pinpointer directly in the headphones. No longer do I need ..read more

Got the Detech Ultimate 9" for the Apex. I tried to do an air test comparison with the stock Viper but EMI is a huge issue in my house and yielded similar range with maybe 1/2" better on the Detech. I took the machine for a quick run over at a local school yard that buddy and I hit quite a bit over the years. The school has a trash line at 8-10" of cans, tons of can slaw and ground balance runs in the low to mid 90's from the rich black soil. I only made one pass up the field and back and am pretty impressed with the performance of the machine. In the field it is definately deeper but will co ..read more

So last night had one of these vintage tanks sitting on my table. Bought from someone dirt cheap, looked almost new. So tinkering with it, it would not turn on. Found that the battery tray had a problem and fixed it. Fired right up, super stable threshold, Wow I thought just like back in the 1980's when I had a similar model. Grabbed a quarter and started bench testing, not that it means much, did some air testing. Incredible, it was responding to the quarter about 18" from the coil. Told my wife about it and said, just have to go out and try it, see what it can find. Then I woke up from last ..read more
