In 1988, Robert Morris, a Cornell Ph.D student, was curious about how big the Internet was.  Robert Morris wrote a program that would measure the bounds of a network and automatically spread to other computers and networks.  He had other motives, such as to demonstrate how insecure many computer networks were at the time.  To conceal his activity, he hacked into the MIT network and released his worm.  He created the very first known malware in the world to measure the size of the Internet.
