USANZ & ANZUNS Many in the urology world attended the big annual urology convention – USANZ & ANZUNS – in Adelaide last week. Our charity had a booth in the main hall, talking with all the doctors and nurses about our work to highlight bladder cancer and help patients and medicos with excellent literature and resources. Hi I am 71 and recently had my cancer removed from my bladder. I am now undergoing pembrolizumab treatment for bladder cancer. After that I expect to have my bladder removed. Now I have been very nervious about this. The Cancer Doctors say the treatment is good. And the surgeons say after removal is the best. One of my best friends came to visit today. My age and he told me he had his colon removed over 40 years ago. Easy to live with just don’t go to the beach in swim wear. I feel a lot better now. Shane is a Urology Research Fellow at Austin Health currently under Professor Damien Bolton. In April 2021 dad went to his GP as he was urinating blood. An ultrasound determined the presence of bladder lesions and he was immediately referred to a urologist. A biopsy in June 2021 confirmed dad had bladder cancer that penetrated the muscle. A very aggressive small cell carcinoma. The urologist consulted an oncologist who stated that the best course of action would be to have a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. Bladder removal was out of the question. I have to have my bladder removed plus nymph gland and all other parts attached to bladder. I’m not looking forward to this at all but believe I have to have it done to get rid of this awful cancer.
