DIGHTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Two Dighton police officers were honored Wednesday for saving a man’s life back in March. The Dighton Police Department announced that Kenneth Almeida and Aaron Swartz received letters of commendation from the Dighton Board of Selectmen for helping a man pinned by a fallen tree. Officers responded to a house on Oak Street on March 9 for a report of a man who was injured while cutting down a tree. FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — The United State’s Attorney’s Office said that a former Fall River police officer was sentenced to jail time for assaulting a man in custody with a baton and failing to report the assault in subsequent reports. 37-year-old Nicholas Hoar was charged with one count of deprivation of rights under color of law and two counts of false reports. The office said that on Dec. 21, 2020, Hoar struck a man who was in custody in the head with a baton. On the following days, he issued reports of the arrest which did not mention the assault. FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — A car crashed through a fence and into trees along Route 24 in Fall River on Wednesday. The Fall River Fire Department said the driver needed to be extracted using jaws of life to remove the door of the car. Crews also had to cut through fencing and multiple trees to reach the car. FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police Detectives, and Framingham Police are investigating the death of a man found behind a restaurant Saturday. Officers identified the man Tuesday as Anthony Junior Lopez of Framingham. According to police, Lopez was working at Hot Table at Shoppers World on the weekend of Saturday, April 20. PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) — From the Lone Star State to the Bay State, 25 dogs will be finding new homes in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is partnering with American Humane and Bissell Pet Foundation to rescue 25 large breed dogs from Texas. NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WLNE) — A peacock proved too elusive for animal control officers in North Attleboro this week. The North Attleboro Police Department said the town’s animal shelter received numerous calls reporting a peacock roaming local neighborhoods. FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — Seven individuals were displaced in an early morning house fire in Fall River. Officials responded to a fire reported in a second-floor apartment this morning on Killburn Street. The apartment was reported just before 2 a.m. On arrival, officials said smoke was visible from a three-story building with six apartments. Crews were met with heavy smoke in the stairways, but the fire was contained to one apartment on the second floor. There was only some reported below the second-floor apartment.
