Kelsey O’Connor’s presentation is about how to rebuild identity after a brain injury. Kelsey is a former student-athlete and recent social work graduate from North Carolina State University. After having multiple head injuries that ended her athletic-career, Kelsey learned to see others, and herself, for more than what they do and hopes to share this new way of thinking with others. It is fair to say that we all have a new appreciation for “connection” following a challenging 2 1/2 years of isolation and disengagement.  It has always been TAP’s mission to find avenues for connection and reduce the all-to-common feelings of social isolation after a diagnosis of aphasia. A different kind of “hot”, 988 is the new hotline for a mental health crisis. With a July heatwave crossing the country, our groups have been talking about how “hot” it is!  But another “hot” topic in our conversation groups has included the much-anticipated hotline for mental health crises. This new national phone number “988” is designed to work similarly to the well known “911” First Responder number.  But while dialing 911 will connect you with EMS, the Fire Department or Police, dialing 988 will link you to a trained crisis counselor. This week saw “Aphasia” in the news, as Gabrielle Giffords, former AZ Congresswoman introduced her long awaited documentary:  “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down”.  This powerful film chronicles Gabby’s life and her political journey that was tragically cut short by a targeted act of violence in January 2011 that took the life of 6 people and caused injury to 13 others.  Gabby sustained a gunshot wound to the brain, partially paralyzing her, causing visual impairment and resulting in severe aphasia and apraxia of speech.  Gabby’s journey with APHASIA is documented with vid ..read more

Raleigh, N.C. – Following Bruce Willis’ announcement that he would be stepping away from acting after he was diagnosed with aphasia, there’s been a lot of media buzz around the topic.
