Mr. Alter established IAM to help others like himself who were still regaining their communication skills after a stroke or brain injury. Since its inception, more than 550 aphasia survivors and co-survivors have participated in IAM programs. Our mission is to provide no-charge speech and language therapy, resources, and community in supportive group settings to anyone with aphasia.

The Psycholinguistics, Aphasia and Modulation Lab, led by Adam Buchwald, is recruiting people with aphasia or apraxia for a research study.
“Adam’s Lab” as it is informally called, has a long history of graduate students who have volunteered with IAM.
This research looks at the effect of mild electrical stimulation to the scalp (also called tDCS) on the effectiveness of therapy.
Who can participate:
Individuals with aphasia/apraxia following stroke
English is primary language
Difficulty producing speech

Free therapy for participating in a research study
Assessments and therapy are conducted on Zoom
Participants will be randomly assigned to intensive therapy or standard therapy
There will be assessments before and after therapy
Participants will receive compensation
The Center for Aphasia Research and Treatment at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (Chicago) is conducting a clinical trial to better understand how to schedule speech and language therapy. The therapy can be done from home on a laptop we will lend to them.

Ivy Huang, a student from the University of Maryland, collected images of art created by people with speech or language disorders. A part of ArtsFest 2022, Ivy curated this exhibition.

Telling Our Stories!
On October 11, 2021,
International Aphasia Movement
held a Zoom Benefit
to help pay for expenses associated with our program
that offers
free speech and language therapy
to people with aphasia.
Several of our members shared their stories of living with aphasia.
We played fun word games.
Lucky prize winners took home gift cards and other fabulous prizes!
